My mate has just landed a job as a "sales executive" selling brand new Peugeots. He understands people well, is articulate, is a good communicator, knows marketing but the stumbling block is he *******hates Peugeots.

What advice is there for him? I've said it's the nature of the job but to be successful you really need to believe in the product. Is he doomed? Any traders out there with information for him?

Thanks.

He doesnt need advice, he is in a perfect situation to be honest, all he has to do is make the company money, the product could be a dog turd the same rules apply, find dog turd on the pitch that suits requirments, if there isnt one supply one, sell dog turd before they buy dog turd from elsewhere

Thats it.

Nonsense above, half of all salesmen in the world must realise that they're product is crap. If he's really that good it won't make a jot of difference.

False enthusiasm is easy to generate, just tell him he's paying the bills and get on with it.

I don't think he was surrounded by options when it comes to employment. You kind of take it as it comes in this town. It's why I work for myself.

The brute force approach is his only tool. He's just concerned he's not good enough to sell a 107 to a punter. He reckons he needs a hat, glasses and a long coat before he even gets in one.

Then he shouldnt be in sales at all.
Needs must. Not many options for him. It's difficult to change direction, as well you know from your thread. He can sell, and he's good at it, but he's always believed in the product before (conservatories / home improvements).

I started out selling Fiats, and I hated Fiats :D

You grow to like the product more and more seeing as they pay your mortgage :)

Ok in that case he needs to somehow get over his hatred of Pugs. Not sure how he is going to do that mind but if he really has to believe in the product he is selling then he plain and simply has to

He needs to get a few "buzz" phrases sorted out, that he can roll out at a moments' notice.

"Most stylish car in its class"

"Superb value for money"

"Excellent safety record"

"Most practical day-to-day car in its class"

All completely unquantifiable statements, that make him sound knowledgeable.

Sell ice to eskimos? You betcha :D

The fact that the customers are already in a Peugeot Showroom means that they are at least happy to entertain the idea of owning a Pug, he just needs to get them in the one that suits their needs the best.

I hate sales jobs but found retail electricals ok. It was working against your colleagues and using scare stories/lies to sell warranties that I couldn't hack.
