Come this Winter, and things will heat up once again in the graphics card industry, with GPU vendors battling it out for the crucial Holidays shopping season. While AMD did not introduce any new GPUs after completing its ATI Radeon HD 5000 series launch itinerary, it did manage to grab significant amount of sales from its graphics rival NVIDIA. For this Winter, AMD and its partners will be in a position to launch the ATI Radeon HD 6000 series graphics processors, according to DigiTimes, citing sources from graphics card vendors.

It is also said that the Radeon HD 6000 series, codenamed "Southern Islands" (members of which are codenamed after islands in the Mediterranean Sea), will be built on TSMC's 40 nm manufacturing process. AMD had originally planned to build Southern Islands on TSMC's 32 nm process, but with the foundry skipping 32 nm bulk for 28 nm which will start operations only by the end of the year, AMD redrew its plans and stuck to the now-mature (stable) 40 nm process. Perhaps AMD learned a thing or two from a wide range of teething problems that plagued the 40 nm production line.

I am guessing this will bring mild performance improvements and lower prices all around.

Either that or good performance increases and higher prices.

The former is more likely given that 28nm should be available soon.

Jesus, I don't know if I could like AMD anymore, but buy a 5830 over a 460gtx, are you mad?

Remember, any price cuts AMD make on the 58xx cards, will have to be matched by Nvidia. A 460gtx is a good 20-30% slower than a 5850 in loads of games, if AMD drop the price to £175 lets say, you'd have to be nuts to buy a 460gtx, so a 460gtx will have to drop to £150 or below. THe 5830 sucks now, and will suck in the future, it just sucks.

Prices will go up on the 5000 series though surely as supply drops. Also be best buying the new cards this side of January before VAT increase.

doubtful - old card - becoming discontinued going up in price ? I would be very surprised.

re new cards, discount you'll get by waiting till after Christmas will be FAR greater than 2.5% additional VAT - which on a £300 graphics card would be £7 or there abouts

Drunkenmaster, go easy man, poor Muel there is crying in his soup now. :D

I wasn't mad 4 months ago when I bought my first one. :P

It certainly doesn't suck now, by any stretch. It's a very powerful card and when I bought it, I was very happy with the price I paid. (£240 for 5850, £170 for 5830, GTX460 hadn't come out yet). It is completely ludicrous to buy one over a GTX460 now, unless you want two CF/SLI and have an AMD setup.

I want another for crossfire, I could have waited for the GTX460, but then I couldn't have had an SLI setup, because my board only does crossfire.

Still think I made the wrong choice? :P

I think I'll just sit tight for Northern Islands as I don't think this will be much more than a little speed bump.
Judging from 4000 series->5000 series, I guess agree that would probably be the case. I suspect speed wise it will be something like this:
6770=5830
6830=5850
6850=5870
6870=GTX480

But considering the price point, if the 6830 is realy as fast as 5850 but for just £140, then it would seem to be a great buy!

how dare you compare ATi to Nvidia :eek:
