Very quick question, so thanks in advance.

If someone attends an interview - taking time off work by saying they had a doctors appointment - would the potential employer contact the individual's current employer for a reference?

So, would the current company find out she actually didn't go to a doctors appointment and instead went to an interview?

The CV in question only says 'references on request'.

I'd be surprised if the time and date of your interview came up, besides they'd probably contact by letter?

Well, the interview was today. To further explain, my partner said she was going to the doctors. Apparently she will find out by 6pm on monday evening. So will the company contact her current employer, thus them putting two and two together and realising she wasn't at work for another reason (lying i guess!).

I hope i've explained it a bit better. :o

Never heard of this happening before.

Everyone does it and generally references are asked for in an e-mail.

Don't worry about it.

Generally a prospective employer will contact you to ensure that you have no problems with them contacting your current employer for the reference. While I'd generally try not to lie to my employer regarding interviews I don't imagine most companies will be unduly peturbed even if they did discover she wasn't attending the doctor - they'll be aware that people sometimes lie about such things and if your partner is looking for somewhere else to work then it's not usually in the companies interests to keep her while unhappy.

Since most references these days are along the lines of a simple "Name worked here from date XX to date XX" and maybe the responsibilities that were held it's unlikely to be a big issue.

Companies usually take up references AFTER you have accepted a job offer.
