I bet it cost a fortune but what an excellent way to have your favourite BMW spruced up.

I love the idea that BMW can do this, but the expense must be outrageous.

I also like the fact you could ask for some modifications. Trying to think what I would like... a fully restored M1 with an M5 engine...hmm.

I'd have preferred it more if they continued the upgrades (such as the auto box), and brought the entire car up to modern standards, iDrive, cruise, digital climate, and the like.

This.

Straight restorations never really interests me, but I love the idea of sticking new technology in older cars.

Nice idea with some older cars, but a 1972 3.0 CSi with iDrive, cruise, digital climate etc fails to continue to be a 'classic car' - which I expect is what the owner wanted.

I disagree, it still remains as a classic car, just a classic car with modern electronics.

So how much of that car is now just simply new parts?

That is a good question. Did they simply rebuild the whole whole car from scratch or refurbish original parts? Was the body replaced or simply sprayed and straightened?

I love classics but I'm certainly not a purist when it comes to them so it still interests me whatever the approach they took.

There are obviously going to be two different trains of thought here. Personally if I owned a classic car I'd want it to be the spec it was originally. If I want the comfort of iDrive then I'll get in my 530i.

WHY would you want the M1 with anything other than the original straight six? Have you ever heard an M1 pro car in the flesh? (check youtube if not - links in the le mans thread in motorsport forum) Shame on you for even contemplating it!

Thats how i see it too.
