Really can't decide on what to do. I've sold my X2 card as I've been having issues with it being multi gpu in a couple of games and the immense heat output.

I ideally want a lower consumption card with less heat (5870), however I also want the best single gpu card out (480), which won't be eol'd by a new line of gpus coming out soon (6xxx series).

I'm probably going to go for either an asus 5870v2 card or an ocuk value 480, about £42 difference if I remember right.

What would you do between the two?

You can get a POV 480 for £351, I would go 480, faster than a 5870 at stock and crushes it when overclocked, better minimum frame rates as well.

You can see the problem have here lol it's pretty much even between wanting the best single gpu or having a lower power, heat, etc card. Ahhh

I had a 5870, great card, when I buy a card I want the best performance that is on the market " excluding dual GPU cards " regardless of power consumption and heat, that's the price you pay for ultimate performance.

The real question i guess is..does the 5870 offer sufficient performance and no drawbacks to still make it the top dog for the majority of gamers?

It doesnt have to be, it wasnt for the 5870.

If I was in the market now though I would agree and go 480 for £350 apart from the noise.

Personally I would not want a card louder than my 5870, which is 43db under load, the 480 is 50 under load. Roughly +10db is a doubling of perceived sound volume so my guess is a 480 would be too loud for me.

I can second raven as i went from a 5870 to a GTX480 and it was much better, better minimums and just seemed more fluid and smooth.
I think all the heat and noise is over hyped as i would say they both sound the same when gaming and both silent on the desktop.

So for all you that havent had both.... no comments :)

Sadly, you cant have both. 480 is the fastest single card, 5870 is currently the best value top card @ £275 elsewhere and is quiet and cool. I know which one I'd be buying.;)

If they both cost the same (roughly) then go for the higher performing card. Only if noise/heat is an issue consider the other.

But.. £75 is a BIG price difference. The choice is your's.

Same volume as a 5870? I reckon not!

sorry mate i have a good few fans in my case and everyones ambient is going to be different, and like i said they were both the same for me.

I never really take reviews words for it, id rather test it myself :)

Yeah remember that is with worst fan profile ever on a GFX card, the 480 default fan will not ramp up until it hits 85+c and by that time it hits 90c+ it's doing 100% RPM. This is not necessary, use afterburner to ramp the fan up earlier with temps, now it's quieter and cooler.
