Buying a PS3 just for GT5... A good idea?

Since the beginning of the GT series I have been hooked. I've got a copy of all the games (except GT5 Pro) and a console for each so I can still re play them.

I currently have a XB360 and rather enjoy Forza3 but it just doesnt have the depth and finish that I have come to expect from the GT games.

With the release of GT5 looming (I hope) I am considering buying a PS3 just for the one game. Do you think £300+ outlay is worth it for just one game?

No it isn't. But there's loads of other fantastic games on offer that you should also get which do make it worth the purchase.

Also £300+ outlay? Where on earth are you buying your PS3!? I can get my hands on a slim 120gb and GT5 for a little over £250.

If I was going to get one it would be the 250GB slim and that the best part of £250, plus the game and a 2nd controller.

With games being release for box consoles this days are there enough decent PS3 exclusives to make it worth while?

If you only really want it for GT5 and maybe a few exclusives, the biggest hard drive model isnt really needed imo. Save yourself a hundred odd quid and get a used 80Gb Fat version.

And with regards to exclusives, yes there are plenty.

Edit - A few exclusives i own and love

Uncharted 1 & 2
Killzone 2 and soon to be 3
Metal Gear Solid 4
Ratchet and Clank
God of War 3
Heavy Rain
Resistance 1 & 2

Keep in mind you can replace the harddrive in a slim PS3 with any standard laptop harddrive. I personally view a 250gb slim as overkill; i own a 80gb fat and the hard drive space is more than enough.

It's down to preference really, i personally rate the PS3 as having the healthiest collection of good exclusives this generation, but i bet for every person that agrees with me, there's a person who disagrees.

Give me a moment and i'll post my generic list of exclusives for you to peruse.

Wait for the game to come out before buying the console. This game has been delayed so many times I have lost interest!

Ahhhh this old gem, the game has only been delayed once, in Japan. Yes it's been in development for years, but PD have only ever put back one release date which was that of the Japanese release.

OP: Bother got a PS3 in anticipation for GT5 (that was 2 years ago!)

I did the same for the PSP with GTMobile, iirc it was over 2 years until it was released and the box featured a screen shot of the game.

I had forgotten about the MGS series, although I understood that they had lost the "exclusive" deal with Sony.

Thanks Bennie - I think a pre-owned console would be the best bet. Although with all the RRoD issues - I am a sucker for having some decent warranty (3 XB360's later)

Streeteh you need to add Joe Danger to your PSN list, awesome, awesome little game!

I've completely lost touch with recent games as of late (there's only three left on my preorder list when it's averaged at closer to 10 for the past year!) so i've never heard of this Joe Danger you speak of.

I shall investigate further.

Kinda. A Metal Gear game will be making it to both PS3 and 360 but it's not part of the Metal Gear Solid franchise. It's an action game featuring Raiden, the Solid storyline is currently going through a Sony phase with MGS4 and the newly released metal gear on the PSP.

Out of that list Uncharted, Demon's Souls and Heavy Rain are titles i recommend you check out some videos of, i hold them in high regard.

Also, get the 120GB slim and put your own drive inside.

Yup - just did this for my second one - bought the 500GB WD from here for £40. It seems mad to pay extra for the 250GB when drives are so cheap, unless you get a really good bundle.

First of all wait till gamescom next week Sony conference 17th sept at 5PM GMT, see what info is giving out about the new PS3 console (bigger HDD as standard). Also supposed to be a lot more info about GT5 and then you will have more of an idea what to expect, also im sure it will be bundled pretty heavily with the PS3 at release.

I got a PS3 on launch day just for GT5. I eventually sold the PS3 due to the lack of games I wanted to play. I will wait until I can actually have a copy og GT5 in my hand before I get another PS3 as there have been many rumours/launch dates for GT5 that have come and gone.

There's loads more exclusives on PS3 that make it worth owning...TO ME.

So you need to ask yourself the same question.

I dont think the console is worth owning for GT5 alone, but then Im not a big racing fan.

I do know i bought a PS1 for FF7 and a PS2 for Devil May Cry. But these were initial purchases with plenty of other awesome games due to hit the market

Cheers for the help guys, will start looking for a pre-owned FAT unit. Do the older ones still support PS1 games, I've got quite a few classics I would like to dig out.

Classic!

Cheers also for the games list, might start watching some games on that popular auction site.

Yeah, PS1 games work fine. Its just PS2 backwards compat that was removed.

Although I say PS1 games work fine, Some are hit and miss. For example 1 of the final fantasy games, Certain disks of the same game wont work. I believe that may be an isolated incident though, where certain australian PAL disks were released as english PAL.

But main answer, and easiest answer is. Playstation 1 games should work fine on PS3. :D
