Ubisoft dumps DRM takes on board steamworks!

its only for that game RUSE they said "most" of their other pc games will still have the same ubi drm

even then kotaku are saying RUSE still might have the ubi drm

If I had it my way I'd have all games on PC released on steam using Steamworks, no complaining about pirate copies and a fully intergrated service like xbox live and PSN. Personally I think we'd see increased sales and in turn more dev/publisher interest and maybe a boost for PC gaming.

Hopefully BioShock Inifite will ditch GfWL and adopt Steamworks. Microsoft should be the only remaining one to peddle that tripe. :D

The sooner PC developers start to acknowledge the platform as 'Steam' and not 'PC' the better. There needs to be a trifecta of gaming by platform: Xbox Live, Playstation Network, and Steam.

Steam solves pretty much all of the ills afflicting PC gaming: piracy, ease of access, compatibility, distribution, market awareness and so on. It's starting to get to a point where PC developers are acknowledging this by either joining Steamworks or making their own derivatives of it and utterly failing (See EA).

This. DX needs to be replaced by OpenGL too... Mac an PC games as one platform would a boost for "PC" gaming

I don't see how people think Steam will solve piracy issues? Afaik the first naughty version of GTA4 to appear was a ripped off Steam version that could be worked around.

I am a huge Steam supporter however!

It would make far more sense and be more cost effective to completely eliminate OpenGL. Why should the largest market (by a significant margin) bend over for the two or three Mac gamers in the world? Why should Nvidia and ATi throw away years of research and millions in the DX API field just to suit the tiny OpenGL minority?

Doesn't make sense.

Traditionally, Steam versions of games have massively higher sales than non-Steam versions. The DRM on Steam games is also well-reputable for its simplicity and sheer difficulty of circumventing (even if it is remotely possible). It also has no limits on installation, so people aren't so inclined to rage against it.

If they did that they'd have to dumb down PC gaming for those single button mouse mac users which would be bad :p

Glad UBI are starting to realise the error of their ways.

I wonder will they re-release games like the latest Prince of Persia and Assassin's Creed on Steam, haven't bought them as they were using the UBIfail DRM.

I don't think steam does much to solve piracy tbh. Valve games often do well and are not hugely pirated because the multi-player experience is so much better if you pay rather than use laggy private servers.

However, perhaps if all the PC devs started using steam and all contributed to a central anti piracy fund they could make steam more effective in combating piracy rather than having a dozen ineffective solutions.

You do realise Microsoft capturing the market was the reason DirectX became a de facto standard? Next you're going to tell me Windows is a superior OS...

OpenGL preceded DirectX by 3 years, if it makes any odds.

That might well be true but the fact is that DirectX clearly has a higher uptake, and It's also had a lot of development put into it. They're hardly going to dump it now.

I don't see how this makes sense DRM wise though considering Steam was cracked a long time ago. I'm guessing they've realised that strict DRM doesn't help anyone.

I'm not a massive fan of steam, I agree that having a unified platform is a good idea but If I buy a retail game that locks itself to steam then you should be able to unlink it from your account so you can re-sell it. It is perfectly lawful to re-sell your games!

Another thing I hate with digital distribution, unlike hard copies you can't sell the games when you get bored of them.

As for GFWL, I have never had any problems with it. Granted it could be a bit better and have a dashboard that appears when no game is running (like steam) but it works ok for me.
