HTC Desire hissing

Do any of find this?

During calls whenever the person I'm on the phone to speaks or makes a sound I get this very audible hiss sound in the background. When the person stops speaking all goes dead silent.

Having looked on the net I can't work out if it's par for the course or unusual and worthy of replacing the phone.

I'm on Orange and have 3 or 4 bars reception during the calls. Calling mobiles, land lines or voicemail makes no difference to the sounds.

Popped into CarPhoneWarehouse at lunch wasn't able to come up with anything conclusive as they were busy and the store was rather noisy.

Have filed a faulty report and may pop into another store this afternoon if I get the chance.

See if the problem persists while using a headset, just to be sure that the speaker is the problem.

That might be the lack of comfort noise.

I've just tried headphones and still get hissing. Sounds like interference coming through from somewhere.

Calling myself and leaving a voicemail I get the usual hissing but it also continues during silences while playing a message. Listening to hiss by itself sounds like a landline with a bad connection.

There is no hissing when playing iplayer or music.

I'll be heading home for a day tomorrow and will try the phone out on some friends.

Never heard of comfort noise before. Don't think this is the problem as it just sounds like a normal phone when the other party is quiet, then injects hiss when people talk.

Quick update:

13/8 - phone reported defective
18/8 - exchange authorisation provided
19/8 - phone sent back
24/8 - replacement phone (new) arrived

Opened the package.. screen broken.

Looks like a point impact with circular radiating cracks around it. Box and envelope are without damage.

When my original phone arrived I mused that the packaging design looked rather poor and could lead to broken screens..

The screen sits flush against the outer cardboard skin of the box. Might look sexy but hardly seems practical. Apple's antenna designer got the chop. HTC's packaging designer needs the same!

New exchange request submitted but I'm off on holiday so I'll see what they have to say in a week when I'm back.
