Supermarket self service tills are terrible for customer service

pain when getting ID'd when it's busy... my local tesco don't even let you use the actual check outs with people working on them enless you have a trolly full of items. so it's quite a pain when you wanna buy some beers!

So you're saying a machine is terrible for customer service?

Or the staff themselves that are assisting are bad at customer service?

Either way... these machine are great for those that use them on their lunch hour!

Sorry, the title doesn't really fit with what I wrote. I should have created the OP content then title not the other way round.

But I meant when staff have to get involved it quickly goes from quick and easy to damn annoying,

They are great.

A tip is to open the carrier bags so you can drop the items into without the annoying "place the f'ing item in the bag" sound going off just because you are .2 of a second slow.

I've seen people que for the self service tills when there are other ones available.

Self-service are good if they are used for one/two items which do not need weighing. Once you get people wanting to do their weekly shop on them in front of you (which always happens) the efficiency of them drops do to the staff overseeing the machines having constantly check on the person doing their weekly shop.

Supermarkets should really make them for 5 items or less....

I use them all the time. Only problem with the one at my local Asda is the volume of the recorded voice. It's so loud, ear piercingly so. I'm not sure if all Asda's are like this, but Tesco's is fine.

I like the self service. It allows me to pay for my shopping without having to wait whilst a checkout person scans them in at a super slow speed.
It means I can be in and out of the shop in 2mins to get my food on the way to work.

Love them to be honest, Can't say I've had a problem with the ones at our local asda. Scan item > put money/card in & done! Only have to touch the screen to say no cashback.

I agree with wozza2k on the 5 items or less, Maybe stretch to 10 items, Amount of times I've seen people putting their whole shopping trolley through one takes them forever!

The only issue I have is if I have my hands full. The machines at Superdrug throw a wobbly if you free your hands by putting your paper in the bag.

They are great if you just want to grab a sarnie. The people who go through with half a shopping trolley are just asking for trouble! :p

Of course they will, it weighs you shopping. Just put it on floor or between your knees.

They should be baskets only and to be fair they are. Just what are staff meant to do once some idiot starts scanning.

The one change I would love to see is the scale reset to zero when you start. Meaning you could use a rucksack.

I won't use self service on principle because I never know when I might need to make a thread for advice on how to ask out the checkout girl.

My local Tesco has so many old people there is never ever a queue on self scan, they are great.

Tip of the day, don't press the start button, just start scanning.

The handheld scanners Safeway had many years ago were awesome, scan chuck in the green box and leave, unless you were randomly checked, no repacking.

Hope the get some sort of RFID gate, and you just pass through a arch, and it magically adds it up.
