Supermarket self service tills are terrible for customer service

I find the weighing thing annoying, too many don't correctly detect that you've placed your item in the bagging area and then it takes like 5-10 seconds to process each item!

"Price check on vagiclean, thats vagiclean, isle 5, vagiclean":D

Only bad thing that will come from these screens, :( altough I wish it happens in real life not just films

Most of the time, I've never had a real problem with them, in fact, the ones that my local tescos has, are pretty good.

However, my main gripe is with the carrier bags, which are smaller than usual, and due to the way they are packed and hung, are a pain to open, during which time the machine is complaining at you.

I also agree that the scales should zero when you start, allowing for other bags, I use bags for life, and it is stupid that I have to scan everything, pay, then pack into bags, all because, if I put my bag on the machine, it freaks out.

And finally, on the subjects of limiting how many items.. as far as I am concerned, if you have 1 basket, and all your stuff fits in 1 basket, then fine, scan away.

Generally very good, but should ban anyone over 40 from using them.

And spackers with massive trolleys.

Can't help get frustrated in the queue. Anyone who has worked on a till let alone a Tesco till will be thinking "I could have checked all that **** out half an hour ago."

Couldn't you just fill the bag with shopping before pressing the start button if they did that? :D

I use them at Tescos and they are brilliant. Can go at my own pace, and 9/10 times no intervention needed. Queues are much shorter as well.

ALways use self checkout tills. Do find the slow/inattentive staff irritating though on the occasions I need them for something. You're paid to stand and look for the tills with red flashing lights calling for your attention... not daydream / txt people / make idle small talk to your colleagues.

Often my local stores runs them with elevated privileges where they don't weight your shopping, which makes them much much quicker to use. I guess that only works if you have an attentive member of staff though to make sure people aren't taking advantage.

I've never used them.

Went to use one once and it was cards only. Yes I had both my debit and credit cards on me, but I didn't want to put my lunch sarnies on card!

Why not? There is no minimum transaction in supermarkets and it's more convenient that carrying cash. Do all your spending on a cash back card and earn some money in the process too...

edit: I'll tell you what is annoying... if you have a small amount of shopping, use one of the smaller tills means for shopping. Don't ignore them and use one with a conveyor, then take another 5 minutes to pack it all after you've paid, meaning I have to stand and wait with my trolley load of shopping. The larger checkouts need 2 people, 1 scanning and 1 packing.

The new Tesco ones with the funnel based coin system is a great alternative to coinstar.

Chuck handfuls of coppers in and it counts very quickly, unlike the older slot based ones.

Stopped going to Tesco now - haven't been for months since they introduced these.

They are fine for a few items, but anything more than a bag and it falls down - especially if you want to bag your items a certain way, spreading the load across a few bags etc.

They are now also severely cutting back on manned checkouts as I normally shop with a mini trolley - too much for self scan, and im ending up waiting longer.

The only choice I have is to not go at all - and I haven't been back since June.

Supermarkets should really make them for 5 items or less....

I put an entire trolley load through them every week.

My local Sainsbury's opens 11am-5pm on a sunday. They open the doors at 10:30 for "browsing". I'm in, around and first in the queue at the self checkouts as they open the store at 11 am, and am in the car and on my way home 5 minutes later. I assume you that they can be used quickly with large volumes of shopping.

What they should do is ban people doing their large shop without someone to help them pack it at the same time!

I find the supermarket ones fine, but the ones in B&Q that you have no alternative but to use because they now only seem to have one manned checkout for the store are dire.
I have used them many times and must have a 90% failure rate where I need someone to 'assist' me when I'm using the thing correctly.
