Hi guys,

Going out with some family tomorrow for a bday down to Southend. The plan was to go on the theme rides there but it looks like the rain has ruined that one :p

So, we want somewhere close to the train station if possible, which has somewhere for kids to play, and where we can have a bite to eat to.

Suggestions? :)

Many Thanks,
Jake

Run down coastal town full of scum, chavs, poverty, white van men and pensioners trying to avoid said chavs.

It's nice, really. :D

Why would you want to do this? It sounds utterly horrible. Why not pop into London as its so close? Plenty to see there and some decent places to eat, as well.

If you have a brolly, you can walk down the pier, but there's not a lot on it at the moment. I'd recommend Bailey's Fry Inn for all your fish and chip needs, it's my favourite chippy down there.

As for inside things, there's the Sealife Centre, right next to that chippy rather conveniently.

It's not my choice. It's where the young'en wants to go :)

I'd much rather a day out in London as well...but meh, can't say I'm too fussed.

TBH its just like most coastal areas, but with a sealife centre. Havnt been there since I was a kid but thats all I can remember, oh and a model railway in Canvey island

You could go to the games arcades on the seafront!

I went to the air show a few years ago, and some of the fish and chip shops were selling frozen chips

Why does the "young'en" have a prefrence of Southend Vs London?!

Because he probably wants to go on the rides and eat candy floss and go in the arcades, like young'ens want to, London is more entertainment for the late teen upwards.

It really depends how young they are

Aye I know about stuff where the pier and seafront is, more asking about closer to the station :)

Cheers guys,
Jake

From what I can remember, shops shops and shops :( my memory was too young this age to take it in fully, all I can remember is it being busy with shops, and walking up a hill

Southend Central station is probably 300 yards from the seafront, Victoria's only about half a mile. Either's close enough, just go straight down the High Street.

There's nothing interesting close to Victoria. Well apart from Priory Park but it's just a biggish park and in the wet it wouldn't be fun anyway.

Also if you just want somewhere nice, get off at Leigh or Chalkwell, Old Leigh is very pleasant if the sun pokes its head out. Not much to do for nippers but for in the future.

It's on the other line for you I think you're from Braintree right? That'd be into Southend then get on at Central and go to Leigh.

i would also recommend Leigh on sea , few places to eat there and from the past times ive been there its chav free:cool:

I wouldn't recommend Priory Park really, as it can be a bit rough. Nothing much to do there unless you fancy a kick-around. It'd be easier/quicker to walk down to the seafront from Victoria than to walk from either of the main stations to Priory too.

Peter Pans and the arcades are probably your best bet to keep the young ones amused Phate. Lots of places to eat around town, just depends on your fancy. If you walk to the top of town (towards the Odeon) from Central, you'll find a few restaraunts together. Towards the seafront (towards the Royals) there's a few other places to eat like McDonalds, KFC, Subway etc. On the seafront itself you'll find plenty of fish and chips. If you can be bothered with the walk, the sealife centre is about 5-15 minutes (depending on your pace) down the seafront from Pier Hill. Ye Olde Chippy just opposite the Kursaal isn't too bad. You can always do a spot of bowling in the Kursaal itself if you fancy it. Depends how much money you want to spend, but if the weather holds out (we had a massive burst today then it was just gloomy and warm) I think Peter Pans/Kursaal/Sealife Centre are probably your best bet for a day out.

I'd catch another train - to Clacton. Much better than Southend-on-mud. The Pier's better for starters. If the kids get bored you can hypnotise them by getting them to watch the Gunfleet Sands Wind Turbines. :D ;)
