Movies others go nuts over that you just don't 'get'

another vote for Lost In Translation here, just left me feeling

what did you want it to make you feel ? like someone said thats sort of the point. its about loneliness and human experience/emotion. i suppose if youve never been in a similar situation to either character then it could be strange though

Donnie Darko
Thank you! I've been through five pages and have agreed with a lot of the films mentioned but not enough to jump onboard the wagon. Then you say Donnie Darko. My brother bigged this film up so much, and so did Mum, so I watched it. I still don't know why I bothered really. There's a big reason its a cult classic; it isn't good enough to be anything better. :D

Just opened up EMDB and found Kung-Fu Hustle. I discovered Shaolin Soccer and Kung-Fu Hustle a while ago and uhmed and ahed on getting them on DVD or Blu-ray. DVD won as they're cheaper and I don't really know of kung-fu films. Shaolin Soccer was a pretty good blast but I was expecting Kung-Fu Hustle to make Shaolin Soccer look awful. It didn't. Considering the reviews I read and the rating on Rotten Tomatoes Kung-Fu Hustle was a real let down.

I hated Donnie Darko but really liked the directors cut.
In it they actually explain the phenomenon you see in the movie and it makes it A LOT better.

I'm not saying that a movie is only good when everything is explained, just that one!

Yup gotta agree with Donnie Darko.

Found it not only to be boring but damn depressing to boot, which is never a good combination for a film.

By the time it had ended I was wishing a plane had dropped on me.

The Usual Suspects - just so 'meh', nothing that you can't find in half a dozen other films, and it wasn't even the first to have such a plot twist. It definitely doesn't deserve it's position in the imdb top 250 films.

this thread is lol

almost every highly respected film gets a mention

i love how internet film discussions are so black and white, either films are the best ever or complete poop

I understand why people dont get some more abstract or slower paced films
I dont understand how people can enjoy stuff like fast and furious or saw

First Saw did have a great sense of claustrophobia and anxiety. For the rest they're just gorefest films to be honest with a story bolted on. I really don't like them much but I have to admit some death scenes are pretty well done. :p

The Dark Knight.

It bored me from start to finish, it went on too long and I honestly could not work out what all the fuss regarding Heath Ledger's performance was about.

Also I can't believe its as high up in the IMDB ratings as it is. Perhaps its just me.!

Cannot agree more on this one! Batman Begins was great and have watched it numerous times. Then the dark knight came out and with all the fuss about heath ledger I was expecting something really good but its just too dam slow and boring :(

I agree with quite a few in here, Donnie Darko esp. I would have said Blade Runner at one point but I've now read the book and the film is a lot more enjoyable.

I would throw Moon in the mix though. Awful film, no clue why every loves it.

No country for old men - That people like it is their prerogative.I thought it was disjointed self indulgent claptrap masquerading as intelligent film.It was fairly faithful to the book though (which I also disliked)

Gotta be Watchmen for me. I just have no clue how people can have liked that movie :/

Also The Imaginarium of Dr Parnassus. Maybe I'm too thick to 'get' it though I guess xD

Bladerunner - watch as a kid, didn't get it, watched it again about 8 years ago, still didn't get it
No Country for Old Men - was quite tired at the time (on a plane), good in places but as an overall spectacle, no thanks
Apocalypse Now Redux (haven't given up all hope, maybe if I watch it again I'll 'get' it)
Donnie Darko - to be fair, I'm only putting it here because I think it is very overrated, I probably do get it.
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind - WTF.

Cars, WALL-E, Up, Toy Story 3, The Dark Knight, Crash, No Country For Old Men, Avatar and Watchmen

And the one that annoys me the most... THE HURT LOCKER!!!! I watched it before it was famous and found it boring, I was gob-smacked when it won a million Oscars and got tons of media attention 2 years later!

You are not alone! I thought it was rubbish, I borrowed it from a friend on blu-ray and it took me 3 efforts to watch the film, I just couldn't stay awake (never happened to me before!). You should see peoples reactions when I tell them I hate it!

Probably get tracked down by the OCUK investigation team but meh.

Star Wars

+10000000.

Star Wars is pathetic!

2001
Godfather Trilogy
Harry Potter (All of them)
*Anything* with Jim Carrey or Will Ferrell in.

Out of morbid curiosity, which films do you actually like?
