Obama defends ground zero mosque plans

I don't see the problem? You can't stop the majority of Muslims from practising their religion because of an extreme minority.

If they have all the planning permission, they are perfectly right to build there. The amount of ignorant people in this world is truly astounding.

Thread rated 1 for sensationalist reporting.

It's 2 blocks away from Ground Zero - where should the limit be? No Mosques allowed on Manhattan? None in NYC? The whole state? The entirety of the USA?

Utter codswallop.

Your naivety is quite disturbing actually.

Islam and terrorism are inextricably linked. When your average Joe can watch a video of a rag head chanting quotes from the Koran just before cutting a captured soldiers head off, what are people supposed to think?

Pure religion has been perverted to suit ulterior motives for thousands of years - of course it still happens today.

I had no idea that the IRA were Muslim. Or ETA or the Red Hand or any number of other Terrorist Organisations.

Would you guys say the same if they built a Hindu Mandar/Sikh Temple/Jewish Synagogue?

"That includes the right to build a place of worship and a community center on private property in lower Manhattan, in accordance with local laws and ordinances, Obama said. "This is America, and our commitment to religious freedom must be unshakeable."
If Americans don't like it they're going to have to change their constitution. I think that might ruffle a few more feathers than building a mosque in Manhattan.

You do know what happened on 9/11 right?

Now we've got that out the way, I don't see the problem with it. It's an old, disused building that they want to turn into a Muslim community centre - it may even increase cohesion!
If they were trying to build a mosque on the site of the World Trade Centre towers, then that would obviously be suspect... But they're not.

Yes I do know what happened on 9/11. Muslim terrorists killed loads of people, I'm aware of that.

Say the terrorists would have been from a different religion, would some of you still say the same?

I don't know if you guys heard of this but a US church is planning to burn copies of Quran and is labelling the day as 'Burn a Quran day' on 9/11. This is most shocking. This is going to inflame lots of tensions.

Reminds me of the 1000 years history of crusades being repeated.

Link:

Although christianity has dwindled in europe it seems US has taken up the crusades cause now with it's military might as it's main weapon. Oh well just another 'modern empire' flexing it's muscles on the world stage and in particular on the middle eastern muslim countries. The only thing is this time the middle eastern countries don't have the fire power to counter so they are an easy picking for US.

Your the one saying a mosque = a stature to Osama...

No, I'm saying that most normal people perceive an inherent link between Muslims and terrorism. Which, given what has happened, is perfectly understandable.

Are you really telling me that Americans walking past a mosque, 2 blocks from the WTC site aren't going to look at that and think WTF? It doesn't matter that the reality is that the majority of Muslims are just like you and I, and that a small percentage of the population are actually engaged in such activity, it only matters what the perception is.

Read the last sentance of the post you quoted, then realise how much of a tool you are

Maybe you should have stated "Religion" not "Islam".

Besides they are Terrorists due to political and not religious reasons. It's only shortsighted ignorant fools who think they are terrorists because of their religion, they are despite it.

I would imagine that if any group (religious or otherwise) wanted to build a center close to a site that was attacked in its name there would be objections. There’s nothing special about Islam in my eyes, only the events of the last decade associated with it.
