Looking at crossfire with a pair of ati 5870 with my Q9550

Playing Dirt2, Mafia, GTA etc

Was playing APB, but it's ****e

For a more balanced system I would have one 5870 and replace your 770 parts with i7 for about the same cost

Are you going Eyefinity or something? Dunno about APB but Dirt 2 and Mafia aren't really demanding and GTA IV would be bottlenecked by the CPU, me thinks?

Eyefinity, no I'm going to consolidate from 2 monitors to one

Planning on getting a HannsG 27" monitor running off HDMI

Mafia 2 rather.

Then whatever else comes along over winter as I generally game more winter onwards. RC Racing during the spring and summer.

Yeah, you probs wont get full 16x PCI-E bandwidth with your mobo across the two ports, so they'll be limited in speed.

I'd just get a single 5870 and be done. Its more than fast enough! :)

Mmm ok fair enough. It's also a case of wanting to be able to run max settings.

Think the money may be better spent on a HannsG 27" monitor then...

Q9550 isn't a lot slower in games than Core i5 750/760 clock for clock.

8x/8x PCI-E 2.0 Crossfire/SLI will be just as fast as 16x/16x with performance difference being in the margin of error (2-3%). We're talking dual cards setups here. Both Radeon 5970 and GeForce 295 scale well despite running on a single 16x PCI-E lane.

Core i7 is pointless purely for gaming, it overclocks just 200MHz better on average than Core i5 and doesn't perform better clock for clock.

Again, Mafia 2 isn't a demanding game.

Single 5870 for 1920x1080/1200 resolution ***. No need for Crossfire tbh, trust me.

So what's coming up that's going to tax a modern day rig.

I'll be gaming at 1920x1200 res rather than 1650x1050

Just like to be able to get 3.8 out of my Q9550

You won't see much gains from further overclocking the CPU, it won't be limiting factor at this resolution for sure. Overclock the 5870 and you're good to go. Shouldn't have any issues with that or cooling.
