There was a news article on Pass Plus a few days ago, most insurers will not give you any discount any more as there is no proof that it makes you less prone to accidents.

You can try and add parents to the policy as named drivers, older women tend to bring the quote down even if they are not going to actually drive the car.

Insurance is all done on risks, enough young louts smash 1.2 Corsas or 1.4 Saxos into trees for most insurance companies to simply say "£3k or nothing", look at cars that most young people wouldn't drive.

Something like a Mondeo is probably a car you associate with an older person, thus less get crashed and you can often get insured on a 2.0 Mondeo cheaper than a 1.2 Chav Box.

I pretty much went on Autotrader, wrote down every car I would be happy driving and could afford and then ran them all through insurance websites.

I ended up with my parents 1.2 Punto for £650~ at 17 just passed with Mummy and Daddy Peerzy as named drivers.

I can currently insure a 3 litre 306bhp £20k BMW cheaper than a can a £9k Focus ST as insurance companies all work off of statistics.

Good luck, most people I know spend about £1500 on a car and the same insuring it for the first year!

Oh and don't get too caught up about insurance groups, I've found they are okay as a rough guide but my IG10 car costs me the same as my IG2/3 Punto would at the moment. I'd simply say keep below about 6 or something as a rough guide and see what comes up cheapest for you.

Yeah added the missus mum, knockned about 300 off :)
Tweaked my job title, reduced it about 30 from what I remember lol.
The area seems a killer tho, same cars at mates dads is like half the insurance.
Im assuming its because were in new builds and the postcode is odd for the area.

Area can be a killer, I'm at a brillaint post code and find myself at 21 able to insure pretty much anything bar LHD cars and Evos for some reason. Boxster S's and such are all under £1500.

Equally JanesyB is older, probably has more NCB than me yet has issues getting insured on hot hatches and such. He does wear a baseball cap though, I look semi-respectable.

Exactly, a lot of it comes down to postcode sadly. My first year's insurance (with a claim to my name!) was only £850 fully comp.

Shoot me down if needed....

I really like the looks of black celicas ><
2001 1.8 Celica VVTi, Manual Petrol
54k miles
2 Previous owners
MOT til feb2011, Tax til Sept 2010

£3k for the car
1400 insurance TPFT
3 miles away from me too

Silly Idea?

Also say I kept this in very good condition, kept it a year and clocked say upto 60k miles. Resale value drop a lot?

There are others available for 1.5-2.5k, just thougth this one looked decent for the age and the miles on it

Just think I'd rather have a car I like than a car just for the sake of it.

Ok been looking all over the post since that last post ><
Been looking at all sotrts and not really gotten very far.

Current ones Im looking at:
08 plate Astra 5dr for 4.4k (ex fleet 82k miles) 1.7 CDti
03 plate Astra 5dr for 3.6k (21k miles) 1.7 CDti
04 plate Fiesta 3dr for 3.9k (~30k miles) 1.4 CDti

All of them have the bits and pieces I want, such as air bags all round and AC.
I have decided I can spend upto around 5k on this as long as its a more family style car has a decent amount of room and has 5 doors. Plan is to keep it for a while.
So I'd be looking at getting a car thats as new as possible for the money to retain any form of resale value :)

Are ex-fleet cars worth looking at? opinions?
Ive had a look at the details and it seems to have been looked after, serviced every 20k and from images looks imaculate in and out (yea images can be deceptive).

Sound decent enough?

Ex-reps cars... Wouldn't go this way. Service intervals 20k, should be 10k. Oil its not that expensive, and I just don't understand why people try to safe money on it. I've seen ones at Halfrauds woman, she was driving Porsche Cayenne, and she bought oil to top up, - HALFORDS BRAND
Another thing, are you actually will drive at least 20k a year to justify purchasing a diesel car? Don't know if you are aware what the new diesel cars are equipped. Its call DPF - diesel particulate filter:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Diesel_particulate_filter.
Its causing a lot off troubles and if is not properly maintained have to be replaced every so often. And it isn't cheap.
Don't know what you do for a living, but in my company all reps don't care about the cars. Cold diesel engine and they are putting the foot down. Its killing the engine.
I know diesel cars are usually cheap to insure, road tax is cheap as well, but unfortunately servicing could be costly.
