Hi all,

So here is the situation, I am best man at my brothers wedding (September), I have no speech prepared!! But the stag day has been sorted ;)!!

I am sure I will be fine with the speech, so that isn't really the issue... but as always, any tips and pointers would be good

The issue is...

I have arthritis in my feet/knees and hands, so I am unable to wear shoes for more than 20 minutes before I find it VERY hard to walk, and I am in loads of pain. Even at work I wear trainers with a suit, as I have no other option!

So I guess what I am trying to ask is; is it acceptable to wear trainers (smart black ones maybe - I would have to purchase them though!!), or should I "Man Up" and wear shoes, and try to find some comfortable ones... which so far I have been unable to do :(

Thanks in advance, I am pretty nervous over the whole affair, as I will know hardly anyone there, as it is mainly my future Sister-in-law's family who will be there!!

I'm sure if it causes you that much discomfort, you could wear some smart black trainers. Maybe get suit trousers just slightly longer than normal that cover them a bit more than they would normal trousers.

Well im getting married inoctober and if my best man had that problem. Then I would just say to him wear trainers as no point in having the best man not enjoying the day. Some black trainers should do the job

Wear shoes in the Church and then change into trainers for the rest of the night.

Is it the material of the shoes, as in could you buy them now, wear them in a bit every day so they stretch and then by the big day they should be fine.

Failing that surely the family know about your arthritis, so if they see you in a pair of smart black trainers they will understand why, and be fine.

As for the speech, dont make it too long, make sure you say how stunning the bride/bridesmaids look, and how shes the best thing that ever happened to your brother. :)

I'm sure no-one will mind whatsoever given the fact you have Arthritis, just wear black trainers. I really wouldn't worry about it.

Enjoy the day :)

Wear some black gym sannies.

But seriously, just get trousers with a longer leg and the smartest plainest black trainers you can.

That is what prompted my asking :p, but at least I have a reason to wear non-shoes :p

I can't do this, as the wedding/day/night is all at the same venue, where I am not stopping... I am stopping in a hotel 10 or so miles away :(

It is the soles, almost like they do not stop "Shocks" as much as trainers, I have tried all sorts of shoes and none help :(

And thanks, :D

Can you not get orthotic insoles that will help out with the shoes?

Never heard of them to be honest  , Specialist has never mentioned it, they advised me to wear trainers if I can (For Work)!

Thanks all, Will have a word with my brother. Suit has already been measured a few weeks ago, so unable to get the trouser leg changed, as I am miles away from my brother and the rental place :(

I'd find somebody who can make me a pair of shoes that work for me. You're probably falling between specialities but perhaps a starting point would be asking whoever manages your arthritis (GP?) why your feet hurt in normal shoes.

It could be something as silly as needing an extra wide fitting or putting in a more supportive padded insole (start with a bigger size of course as the insole will take up space).

Short term though, wear what the hell you like.

There are specialist shoes you can have made which will help with the shock absorbency, but an assessment for those will take months. Can you get your GP to refer you for an assessment by an orthotist specialist. Or if you see a physio to help with your arthritis, they can refer you as well.

A specialist at the hospital is managing it at the moment, I am seeing them a couple of days before the wedding, so will ask then. Before I went to Download Festival, they gave me a steroid injection, which helped a lot!

I think it may be needing an extra wide fitting to be honest, as I find shoes too tight around the sides, the joint affected is the "big toe" joint, and I cant remember the correct name :/ lol

I have never tried insoles, so will see what they recommend :)

Thanks :)

I am unsure what department I am in at the moment to be honest, as I have been referred to that many in recent months! But if I remember correctly it is a Rheumatologist :)
