I was just wondering what peoples thoughts are on this.

My wife is a junior Doctor in A&E she was attacked by a patient a couple of days ago. Nothing too serious but she was left a little shaken up and bruised. It did not help that it was only her second day on the job.

We (well she) has decided not to press charges. They guy was drunk, he lost his wife and child to a car accident a year ago.

Would you do the same?

I am a very unsympathetic person, so if I was your wife I would refuse to treat the individual, they could bleed to death for all I care.

I personally couldn't give a flying **** if someone has lost his family in the past, it is no reason for violence! Being drunk is an excuse you use when you are 17!
Using his past as an excuse is a disgrace.

I probably wouldn't press charges, I would have a private word and set him straight when he is sober.

he has come to your wife for medical treatment and has attacked her!

I'm guessing he has been brought to A&E by an external body - police, concerned 3rd party etc. He'll almost definitely be drunk and extremely emotional. He has lost everything in his world and needs support. Of course it's unacceptable to attack any innocent party, but in this poor man's life he's so distraught that what is and is not socially acceptable is a distant memory.

You are probably right, but he is an adult, is drunk and is accountable for his own actions.

He sounds like he has gone off the rails to me. It is a good job we aren't in America or he would run into a Primary School with a machine gun. Luckily we are in Britain, so next time it might only be a stabbing:rolleyes:.

No I'd press charges, neither being drunk nor having lost family members are excuses for assaulting someone.

I would press charges. It doesn’t matter that he had a family tragedy a year ago. He shouldn’t be attacking people and the line has to be drawn somewhere. He might do it again with more serious consequences.

press charges, she doesnt deserve to get physically asbused because of anything.

pricks that attack medical staff should be subjected to the full extent of the law and the judges should go heavy too.

It's a tough one. Whilst violence is unacceptable, and the impact it has is horrible, it has to be tempered with reason.

Pressing charges could be the final straw for such a person, who knows the ramifications of not employing some compassion?

Being a doctor is a vocation and like I said, should not have to put up with violence ever, but accept that occasionally it comes your way.

Maybe have a chat with the man and judge his behaviour?

You mad Acid, you want him to have a chat with the man who hit his wife? The OP will end up beating the **** out of him if that happens.
