Hi all,

Was thinking of visiting Jersey for a few days and taking the car. Anyone been on a UK - Jersey ferry? If so, good experience?
I would go Weymouth - Jersey.

That is a fast cat I think.

Went on it years ago and there were people being sick everywhere, even on the stairs, was quite funny.

Nothing much to say about it, I hate sea travel myself but it's the only way to take my car away. If you feel you hate being catteled with everyone else there's a "business" class (room with slightly comfier seats and a table/electric socket..... yeah. If there's free room and there usually is, just ask the lady at the door and pay the extra (10 quid?).

But don't let that assume you'll get peace and quiet in that room, it's quick though but it'll stop off in Guernsey first then head on to Jersey.

Lived in jersey now for many years, been on the boat many times. The fast boat is around 3 1/2 hours to weymouth, stopping in guernsey for about 20 mins to unload. In calm seas and sunny weather its great, fast and easy to relax - but if you don't stomach the sea well then if its slightly choppy then you will feel it. Find a seat in the middle of the boat for less up and down motion if its not too crowded. We travelled to England last year at the boats wave height limit - 3 metres on the leg from jersey-guernsey and 1m cross channel and it wasn't nice, many people practically passed out. I stupidly thought being up on deck would make me feel better but all that did was get me soaked in cold, sea water coming up over the front plus the boat slamming into the waves made it dangerous to move about so I had to stay there until we reached guernsey. My car got damaged too as did 8 others as they get parked close.

But... jerseys a great island to see don't let that put you off :-)

ps. the ferry can be expensive sometimes in my experience, may be worth looking into flights and car hire as an alternative.

Thanks for replies,

The only car ferry I've been on is the Isle of wight link, was all very pleasant and you can stay in the car if you wish or visit the cafe + seating area.
So with the Jersey crossing, you are assigned rooms which you remain for the whole journey?

Thanks,

I actually did do a Jersey - Guernsey journey when I was little on a family holiday. I remember it was a rough trip on a catamaran? I was under the impression though a car ferry would have been much more stable? Like it was on the wight-link.

Prices seem to be about £240'ish for a return ticket with a "reclining-chair"? So that seems pretty reasonable.

Also, slightly OT but is it still the case that if you wish to move to Jersey you have to have some sort of 'reference/check' or similar? Or am I totally wrong in thinking this?

It's fine :).

Been on the fast cat to Jersey quite a few times now. Some people will find that they don't like catamaran and need sea-sickness tablets, but I love them!

You can get a cabin on the slow overnight ferry I believe but I have never been on it.

You can't stay with the cars on the fast cat - you have to go into the passenger area.

You are assigned a seat number (there's no rooms on the fast ferry) but if it's a quiet crossing you can sit wherever, I usually move around once it starts moving. You can't stay in your car on these.

The slow overnight boat with a cabin for sleeping is actually a nicer crossing as you can sleep.

For daytime take the fast cat and get it over with.

It's a rip-off and the operator (Condor) suck as well as their fleet which permanently breaks down (or sets on fire).

It is, however, as stated the only way on and off the island to the mainland with a vehicle.

Take a laptop, pay the 20-30 quid and get in the "Club Class" with a power socket and away you go. There is no in-boat entertainment and the food is pretty naff. Avoid cooked stuff, stick to the crisps and rolls.

If you value your cars bodyworks as I do then nanny the car till everyone else around you has gone up a deck. The cars are packed like sardines in a tin so even the most respectful and aware people will have a hard time getting out without letting the door touch your car. Stick around and "help".
