A 52-year-old man has become the first person in America to receive a life sentence for drink driving.
Bobby Stovall was told he will die in prison after being convicted of his ninth drink-driving offence.
Prosecutors in Texas had demanded a harsh sentence as they feared the repeat offender would eventually kill someone if was ever allowed to drive again.

i actually laughed in utter disbelief when i read the article, i mean i'm all for harsher sentencing for repeat offenders, but holy cow

i really don't know what to make of it at all, part of me is thinking crazy Americans reaching for the big stick instead of forcing him into rehab/treatment, yet another part of me also thinks it's the only way to really make sure he doesn't kill any body when he's out & about, hammered behind the wheel.

Dont know what help he has been offered in the past, but 9th time then he should have learnt by now so I have no sympathy for him.

He's been convicted 9 times for drunk driving (aka trying to kill innocent people) and he gets life in jail... I don't see the problem. They are just trying to save lives from scum like him.

The US seems to have a crazy leniency to drink driving - good he's finally off the streets tbh.

I wouldn't say they were lenient (depends from state to state tho) its just that by the time "due process" has gone through the motions hes had plenty of time to commit more offences.

Good, hes probably been offered rehap ect and it hasnt worked or hes ignored it so he deserves a life sentance keeps other people safe

Sounds good to me, he is a repeat offender and obviously has been through the system 8 times before. Therefore the only way to stop him re offending is to lock him up.

But then I don't think we should have fixed sentences, you should be released when you are considered safe.

if he was a celeb he would been released Scot free lol

because no celeb has had prison time for the first or second offence, let alone 9th.

This is spectacularly harsh and expensive if they didn't try him with rehab or anything previously which seems to be the case. If they had though and he had failed then it is deserved just to keep him off the roads.

I see nothing wrong with the sentence. Over here he'd get a fine and ban yet still continue driving. I suppose life is a tad harsh, 15 years might have sorted him out.

Wow, what a harsh sentence. But come on, nine times is taking the ****! Yeah, agree with above, a couple of failed attempts of rehab then sure give a long sentence but life? surely 5-10 years would be more appropriate imo?
