life time sentence for persistant US drunk driver

Its not as if he hasnt had a chance to obey the law like the rest of us. Plus if he has been caught 9 times, how many times do you think he has been driving while drunk but not gotten caught?

seems harsh 5 or 10 years yes while going into rehab at prison. Life without parol wtf thats shockingly harsh :(

Poor guy (really?)

He was going to keep on breaking the law and putting people's lives in danger... what could you do?

I assume he was already banned from driving...

Why not just ban him from driving for life and give him a reasonable sentence.

''you will die in prison'' is seriously not fair.

Dam, you wouldn't even get that if you hit someone on your first time drink driving.

As people here have already mentioned, he probably has been banned from driving numerous times and if he gets imprisoned for only certain amount of years, no doubt when he gets out, he'll just be doing it all over again...

There is no place for society for people like him.

Still, in my eyes it is wrong to jail someone for life simply because they are unable to use a car responsibly.

It's completely deserved. If he wants to drink 24/7 then get a bus or ride a push bike.
Suddenly peoples opinions will change once he kills someone

Good!

This isn't the same as being slightly over the limit. This is someone who is constantly drinking and driving with no regard for the safety of other people. Just trying to make life slightly more convenient for himself at the cost of other peoples safety. He belongs behind bars.

assuming he has had rehabilitation, fined, banned and sent to prison before.
How do you stop him. He is a habitual offender and there is only one way to remove the risk, which they have now done.

lol, of course I wouldn't rather he continued doing it. But its wrong to essentially end his life over it. I don't know the full story, but if he is driving his own vehicle/s, why not simply take them from him? If he gets a new one, take it again. Could be quite profitable actually :D

On a serious note, I don't know what other options there are, but come on. Jail for life?

The same sentence is not given to those who repeatedly steal cars and then race them until caught. Which is probably more dangerous.

What if he hit and killed a child? Or anyone for that matter. He's taking away their life, just to save himself a cab fare.

He knows the risks and continues to do it.

You could say that about anything though.

Someone who has been caught speeding many times for example. What if he had killed a child? or anyone for that matter? He is taking away their life for the sake of a few minutes.

Don't get me wrong, I'm all for doing something more harsh about things like this to stop repeat offenders. But I think life in jail for repeatedly drink driving is harsh especially when compared to other, similarly dangerous offenses which happen more frequently.

At first I thought '' that's a tad harsh he didn't hurt anyone yet'' then I noticed it's the 9th time, it's his own fault. Still, I'd think 2-5 years would be enough for him to learn.

Speeding is nowhere near as dangerous as alcohol in traffic imho. It's in a completely different league.

Of course it depends on the amount, but when really drunk people can barely walk let alone drive...
