Im looking for a a good quality manufacturer but I also want performance.

At the minute it looks like it's between -

Pality Sonic Platinum 1GB
MSI Cyclone 1024MB
Gigabyte 1GB OC

Anyone tell me which ones best or have any other suggestions?

Thanks in advance.

Ah well I wont be able to order until after monday so I think its between the MSI and the Gigabyte card.

Gigabyte or MSI - Sonic Platinum is nowhere near as good quality, and has a whiney fan.

I've got the Gigabyte and it's whisper quiet with exceptional performance and was cheaper than the standard Palit Sonic card I bought originally before returning it.

I agree with this - I would have got the MSI instead, but its a good £15 quid more expensive for not much in it and then you are getting close to 5850 prices.

I'm also considering picking up a GTX460, maybe later today.

I currently still run the ageing system in my sig, mostly anyway, I'm on Windows 7 x64 and a few other changes, but it's essentially the same.

It's being powered by an Antec Neo HE 550w.

The 8800GT was a pretty low power usage card, and so too is the GTX460 I believe, comparatively speaking.

So if I just swap out the 8800GT for now, and replace with the GTX460, maybe the Gigabyte one as I read that seems to be one of the better ones regarding noise, then do you guys think my PSU would still be up to the job?

I'm also powering 5 HDDs (4 mechanical and 1 SSD) and 2 optical drives.

The system has run perfectly thus far.
I'm aware my CPU is going to hold the 460 back. I've just been unable to decide whether or not to put something like a Q8400 in there for the time being, or get a whole new i7 system later in the year.

Either way, I should expect the GTX460 would still give me a few extra frames where my 8800GT struggles, and it'll get a new CPU later in the year anyway, either way.

I realise there are often a lot of "will my PSU power this" type threads, and people must get sick and tired of them, and my initial reaction was to just buy it, and be fairly confident it would work, but I figured no harm in asking in here first?

Yes, I realise I have a lot of HDDs, which there's no need.
When I do the upgrade, I'm also going to get one big HDD and replace the smaller ones. Again, I'm going to do an upgrade sometime later this year.

Thanks,
Vin.

Your PSU should be fine. My 460 GTX is being powered by a 5 year old Tagan 480W with no problems. I have got a Q6600 overclocked and 1 SSD and 1 HDD so a bit less there but you have got some extra power.

The requirements from nvidia I believe are 450W and 23A on the 12V rail.

The MSI is the best one but its also more expensive, I would go for the Gigabyte one as it can usually be found for £15 less than the MSI one.

Thanks mate.
Just what I wanted to hear ;)

I'll take a look at the MSI, but will in all likelihood end up with the Gigabyte.

Thanks again,
Vin.

You'll be happy with Giga or MSI, both are excellent.

Go with whichever you can get cheapest. :)

Actually now I come to look at the pictures, the fans on both the MSI and Gigabyte look massive ;)

How many slots do they take up?

At the moment my 8800GT is a single slot card.
The slot below it is empty.

The slot below that has either my RAID card or my X-Fi card.
The pictures make it look as though you need at least three slots free to fit it in?

Just thought I'd better check that too before buying anything!

Vin.

Both are 2 slot cards.

Though you really want the 3rd slot as free as possible so you aren't blocking airflow to the GPU.

So put your smallest card in that 3rd slot (preferably half height, or none at all!).

They are indeed beefy but I believe they are only double slot coolers, pretty much the norm these days.

OK, thanks. That's fine then.

Double slot is indeed what I'd consider the norm, it must just be the angle of the photos, made it look as though the fan sticks out further than the two slot size, which I was judging from the metal bracket where the video connectors are.

So thanks again,
Vin.

No worries, but I would try and do as HeX has said about putting your smallest card in the 3rd slot so it doesn't affect the airflow as much as it would with a full size one.
