Suicidal dogs

Incorrect, any accident involving an animal injury or death you are legally required to stop at the scene and remain there for a reasonable period of time that will allow any people involved directly or indirectly in the accident to come to you and request your contact details.

This was fulfilled by reporting to the owners house.

If the animal is unattended or its owners cannot be traced, THEN you must report to the police station as soon as reasonable and within 24 hours.

Incorrect. Still a reportable RTC, covering the OP'S bottom should the owner of the dog later report him of an offence. How you comply with s170 is your choice ;)

You must stop at the accident scene if there is an injury to a person but you are required to report an accident to the police in person within 24 hours if an accident took place involving damage to any property (including a vehicle, private property (including fences or walls), street furniture or certain animals (dogs or farm animals but not cats or wild animals) if for some reason you did not stop and exchange information with the person suffering the potential loss at the accident scene.

One would hope one of the most respected motorist legal services would know the law better than your average forum member. Dogs are classed as property, and as such an injury to one is not treated in the same way as an injury to a person where police involvement is compulsory.

More evidence.

A police website discussing the requirements of S170 of the RTA?

So unless you can provide any evidence to the contrary, I stand by my statement!

It was possibly the most traumatic experience of my (and the deer's) life.

I feel for you man, I had to do this to a mouse once. Although it's slightly different because it'd only gotten half caught in a trap with which I intended to kill it, so any feelings of guilt would have been hypocritical.

My Brother was on his police advanced motorcycle course when it became his turn to take point. He hit a deer at "an undisclosed speed" in excess of the national speed limit, it wasn't pretty. The forks of his BMW were pushed back into the engine, to this day none of the witnesses can work out 1. how it kept it on its wheels and 2. how he wasn't killed.
