Right, with the countdown to Vegas already in full swing and my days halfway to being organised I've now got the choice of hiring a lens to take with me.

I've decided to leave my 28 - 105 at home and take my 70 - 300, 50mm (unsure about my macro lens at the moment). Now the general feeling is I'll be wanting to record the scenery and architecture of the trip and been looking at a lens for this job. I've narrowed it down to potentially one of 3 lenses.

First up the 16 - 35 mm L. Nice wide angle ideal for large expanses of land and can maybe get some interesting street shots with this.
Secondly 24 TS lens. Had an email convo with Gaffer on this one, but as it requires more than point and shoot like most lenses will there be too much faffing for not enough results.
Thirdly 24mm prime. Spoke to my dad and he possibly thought that this lens would be wide enough for my purposes.

So I'm a bit stuck on what to go for. Any thoughts? :)

17-40 L? Decent IQ, small and light but still decently built, unless you need the faster 16-35 L it might be a better holiday/travel option?

I think you'll need a tripod or IS/VR to get sharp shots, or a faster lens than either of those (a 24mm f/1.4 would do) but either would fit the bill really...

Aye, was assuming that he would be taking a tripod.

I would be taking a tripod. I realise that with either the Tilt Shift lens or the 24 mm prime I'd be restricting what i can do at the low end since ill be leaving my 28 - 105 behind which is swaying me more towards the 16 - 35. I cant see too many times which I'd have it wide open but its nice to have that option, so i think thats why i disregarded the 17 - 40.

I certainly do have the curiosity to see exactly what the Tilt shift lens can offer, its just whether or not this is the trip to test things out.

As for the trip to the Canyon, thats booked already. :D Got to sort out Red Rock Valley but I think Zion National Park is a little bit too far to travel when I'm over.

You can get some great bellagio fountain shots with a nice wide lens and a tripod :) 16mm would be great, I'd say the 16-35L is your best choice. 24mm wouldn't quite be wide enough for some stuff

was recommended to go up to the balcony with a pint and watch the fountains from up there rather than at street level :)

Well I've emailed lensesforhire to see about hiring the 16 - 35 for two weeks to give me a couple of days to play with it before going on holiday and a couple of days extra after i get back (to recover :p) and its a reasonable £110 all in so I'm quite happy with that.
Almost got all my away days sorted out for when I'm over at Vegas as well. I'll be taking in the Grand Canyon, Red Rock Valley, Eldorado Canyon / Gold Mine, (not sure about the Bryce Canyon / Zion Park combo yet time / travel distance is a factor as its a shorter tour than the GC but its further away including two stops)

And of course taking in the sights of Vegas itself. Think I've left myself about 2 days free to myself whilst packing everything else in! :D

Didn't think i needed to start a new topic for this. I have another question about the 16 - 35. I would guess it would be best if i get a CP filter to go with the lens but wondered would i be able to use my Cokin P series filters if i got a 77mm adaptor ring or would it suffer from bad viginetting at the lower end.

16mm on FF? I think it'll likely vignette a fair bit, I have to be careful at 24mm or so on a crop sensor (with 77mm barrel and P series holder). Keep in mind that you may struggle depending on the subject at that focal length with a CP, if you shoot landscapes then the strength of polarisation will vary across the sky and you'll get uneven colouration as a result...

I've realised its an 82 mm filter thread and did a little reading on the net and certainly below 20 mm it will vignette. A more worrying aspect is that yes I would be using that lens for landscapes and reckon I'd need to buy a whole new (expensive) filter system to go along with it and since I'm only hiring the lens would seem a bit of a waste. I may have to have a rethink here :(
