Vodafone + Santander muddle

I switched my current account to Santander. As part of this they switched all my direct debits for me.

They wrote to Vodafone - Vodafone then wrote to me and said that they have my new details on file and that they would collect my bill via direct debit. However they failed to do that despite there being plenty of money in both my old and new accounts. They somehow think this is my fault and having questioned them they say this is going to be reported to Experian as a late payment?

What is my best angle of attack here?

Thanks

If Vodafone has sent you a letter then you should find the complaint email address, cpdf their letter to them and outline your comnplaint and the reasons you believe this is not your fault.

If you have a letter from Vodafone confirming they have your new details, then it is their fault and I would register an official complaint.

Experian are a credit checking agency and leaving a mark on a credit record can make it difficult to find credit somewhere else.

Or in your case say you are interested in buying something expensive like the awesome gaming rig on OcUK on credit but when doing your credit check, it shows as saying you are late at paying bills. You could be refused credit.

They say they can not draw a direct debit in the first 14 days of a direct debit being set up. They changed the direct debit details on the 30th of July and then posted me a letter. My due date was the 1st of August, so that got missed. I got the letter on the 2nd I think, confirming everything was okay. I hadn't even been aware of 'when' Santander were going to inform them of my new details but I was assured it would not cause problems. Now on my bill published today it informs me the payment was late! I had no control over the dates!

My understanding of direct debits is that it shifts the responsibility to the retailer to collect payment when required. Why didn't they just wait a couple of days before changing the direct debit details so the payment would go through on the 1st?
