Hi guys I would appreciate very much some advice :o
I built my PC many moons ago in 2007 its specs are below.
I spent weeks of research and dropped 2grand when I first got it.

PC SPEC:

O/S: Windows XP home edition

Mobo: ASUS Striker Extreme Republic of Gamers Series - motherboard - ATX - nForce 680i SLI - LGA775 Socket ( with stock fan)

CPU: Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 @ 2.4ghz

GPU: GeForce 8800GTX SLi

Ram: 2GHZ DDR2 Transcend

Sound Card: Creative X-Fi Fatal1ty

DVD: DVR-212

Now I've been toweling along with this build. It runs well but now its age is beginning to show. I mainly use it for gaming etc.

I haven't been keeping up with hardware since then so I'm pretty in the dark now but i'm wondering if there are any cheapish suggestions for upgrades on my hardware or operating system.

I'm thinking about upgrading to windows 7 or vista so i can take advantage of DX10 that and replacing my mobo?

Any help would be very very greatfully recieved:D

What's your budget for the upgrade?

Cheapest option would be add an extra 2GB of RAM, buy a CPU cooler and try overclocking. Don't expect wonders as the 680i doesn't do particularly well with quad cores, however you might get an extra 400-600MHz out of it.

You could also stick in a new graphics card, however 8800 GTX SLI still does pretty well.

I'd get Win 7, an extra 2 gigs, maybe a small SSD for OS / applications / favorite games, OC the Q6600, adding decent cooler, save money, and wait for next gen in 6 months. The SSD, Win 7 will be handy in the next upgrade.

A 8800 GTX SLI should be pretty decent already. I'm not sure a GTX 460 will beat them. But yeah, DX11. The GTX 460 1024MB is the one to get atm.

I doubt you'll see much improvement in gaming with your current setup, Unless you go for a i7, triple channel, and a GTX 480, so not exactly cheap :)

True, buy a Crucial C300 or a Vertex 2E drive if you fancy an SSD. Also make sure you get the retail copy of Windows 7 so it'll be easy to switch it over to your next PC.

GTX 460 will slightly beat 8800 GTX SLI most of the time, also means you'd have DX11 support and lower power consumption.

IMO, you should really look at buying an extra 2 gigs instead of replacing with 4 gigs. You'd be saving at least £30-£40 on something that is temporary anyway. But it also depends how much overclock your current memory will allow, and how much you need (although a Q6600 at stock ain't that terrible).

4 gigs is definitely a win though. And so is a SSD imo. 64 gigs will give you around 30-40 gigs worth of storage for your games and apps, as long as you keep it clean. The C300 is a good buy. I paid more for a train ticket to London once.

I suppose.

Here's one of many discussion about why upgrading a Q6600 may be a waste of cash for general usage.

The best you can do is Win 7 (retail), and 4 gigs to bring it up to date. SSD a nice addition, if you have the cash and the curiosity. Best wait and see, basically.
