Giving up smoking

Second time I've done it this year - the first was for around 3 months, and I did well until I started going out drinking lots and spending more time with smoking friends. I found this time very easy with the aid of patches.

I've since given up again, its been just over a week and I've had two single moments of weakness which I've immediately regretted and both seemed to have strengthened my want to give up rather than hinder it.

The only issue I have is that I'm incredibly bored, and hungry. I often used to smoke when I felt hungry in between meals, which is where I believe the problem comes from.

So my question is, what can I do? I hate chewing gum and I really don't need to put any more weight on.

ive been on the naisal spray and patches and gum for 3 weeks
im very very chuffed with myself, normally i give in after a day or so, 3 weeks and i reccon ive half cracked it.
the naisal spray has a lot to do with it for me, whenever i get the urge i have a spray and all is good

for te boredom, get the e-cigrette, it really really works, i had a took one my mates when i go round and i can honestly say they are very good, you have a cig in your hand, your getting nico replacements and your producing a vapor, works for me

Its not the giving up I'm struggling with - the patches do the job of curbing my cravings well enough (I have required extra will power on a few occasions, but generally doing ok). I'm even managing to have a few pints, or coffee/redbull without wanting one now.

Its the boredom/hunger I'm struggling with.

Firstly, it can't be the 2nd time you've given up, because that means you didn't give up the first time, you just suspended it for 3 months :p

Anyway, try eating more at meal times perhaps? I wouldn't chew gum anyway, it just makes you more hungry and leads to ulcers, especially on an empty stomach.

My mum stopping for 9 months while she was pregnant with my sister. She then started again!

This year she stopped for another 4 months. Then started again!

As a non-smoker myself can someone explain to me how the urge can be so strong after such a length of time? I got really annoyed at her when she started again as I obviously care about her health and would rather she didn't smoke.

I just find it ridiculous why you would start again after stopping.

I can't describe why it happens. For me its always been a gradual thing - once I'm confident I've given up, and no longer require aids, I tend to feel confident I can have just the one and be OK. Last time, between 'just the one' and starting again was about a month or more, but it was simply a downward spiral, gradually smoking more of those 'just the one' when out drinking.

I find the other half is good motivation - I kept it to about 2 or 3 a day for over two weeks until she found out, went mental and then it stopped, until she gave in and let me smoke on a little trip we went on - after that it was terminal :(

If you stopped for any reason except that YOU want to stop it is easy to just fall back into the habit again even after a long period. It has to be your own decision that you really want to stop.

hunger I'm struggling with

When you feel hungry (between meals), try drinking a glass of water (which not only depresses the appetite, but also gives a feeling of "fullness") or eat some kind of "healthy snack" fruit etc, ie. something with volume and a low calorie count...decent website can be found Here...for the bordem, take up some new activity/hobby...

I quit when I was around 18, close to turning 19. Since then I've had maybe 2 sigs. That said, I quit actually smoking at 16 but used something called snus until I quit completely.

Still now, almost 3 years later I feel the urge to have one. Especially in situations where I would usually smoke or use snus. When drinking, bored between meals (like OP), watching a film relaxing, etc. I don't know if it's the habit that makes me crave one or if it's the nicotine.

Haven't had anything with nicotine since December. Although I have been close a few times :p

I usually had a load of water to drink between meals or had mints to eat when I was quitting.

i stopped for 10 years and went back on them last year.. my point is i quit again over month ago while going on a diet at the same time...
reason? while dieting would keep me occupied in what i had to do while i was going mad for a cigarette and it worked so far havnt smoked and lost a stone in a month all is good for now, so you can do it too! lots of people here iam sure have won this battle

Did you still have the urge to smoke after 10 years without one?

Or did you start again for another reason?

There's a way of giving up smoking that helps immensely. Replace it with something.

I binned smoking back in 2008 ( I wasn't a heavy smoker and it was mostly "social" ) and replaced it with cycling. Got myself a bike on my works cyclescheme and started off comutting back and forward to work. Fitness level shot up to sky high levels with the combination of the two. I've never looked back.

Replacing smoking with cycling gave me something else to concentrate on and occupy my time with. You hear people saying this all the time but giving up smoking isn't just about giving up the cigs, its a complete change of lifestyle. Replacing it with something else you enjoy hugely and into the bargain is something that is doing you good, is a cracking way to go about it.

Do it m8. You wont regret it. Best of luck.

even after years you would think "ummm a cig would be nice" but the smell and taste would be sickening and that stopped me.

reason i went back on them... got ****ed off and thought one wouldnt harm but it did and i know after that i was a complete IDOIT for doing it.
