Should I get an Ipad?

As much as I want one, I get the feeling that the retina display will eventually make it to the ipad version X/ipad mini. It will be a big buyers remorse for me.

That's been discussed... And the end result is the cost. As the resolution would be ridiculous

What the he'll would yando with that kind of resolution in the iPad lol, most of it would just be wasted!

I was in the orbiting frozen ice object store earlier today standing near some people who were drooling over the iPads on display. I couldn't help eavesdropping on their conversation the gist of which between all the cooing was that it was basically a Laptop without the lid and would be a perfect replacement for their PC. I simply shook my head in disbelief at the naivety of some people.

Apple as we know are very very good at marketing their products and always make them aspirational. The thing is though that with customers like I overheard today their job is made all to easy. Whatever one says about the iPad and there are plenty views from both camps, to me it is still an eye wateringly expensive bit of kit and you are not getting a lot for your money either. For that sort of cash you could buy a complete and very respectably specified PC, that's the Tower, monitor keyboard the lot.

The salesperson told the couple that they didn't have the particular model in stock that they wanted. The couple said they would have any model at all just so long as they could have one today, what madness.

Every time I think of the iPad I think of Steve Jobs and the laughing puppet in the Fun House at Blackpool for that's how he must react every time he looks at the sales figures. Personally I would be embarrassed to death to admit to anyone that I had spent so much money on such a poorly spec'd bit of kit.

I see your point

But it is all relative. £400-800 is an expensive thing to some people and a very aspirational amount to some others still.

To some though its not really much, just a small bit of the disosable spending monies in a month. You never know, it may not have been a lot of money to them?

Either way, I still love my iPad

I do hope these rumors aren't true. 512ram will be in the new iPad, better cpu etc etc. Not an increase in specs this quickly

i hear the internets speaking of a 7 inch version with the same res. That would be much more manageable for me and also sharpen that screen up. Failing that, I'll wait to see what the next gen version offers. I know so many people that had their fingers burnt with the iPhone 2g

Been playing with my sis in laws ipad that she bought in America...its a neat thing but im glad i didnt get one as i would get bored of it pretty quickly....no way is it a replacement for a laptop or pc...you cant even hook up a optical drive to it and neither can you connect a cat5 cable to it so if you havent got 3g access or access to a wifi spot your screwed.

But i can see the whole novelty of it though...its a nice device like all apple products are.

I would agree with you there about the boredom issue. The hype for the iPad has been pretty intense bordering on mania. However, I have heard a number of people that have said they are now getting a tad bored with theirs now the novelty has worn off a bit.

I think that like the star that burns to bright and quickly burns out the iPad is the same, people want it at any price but having got it the fever quickly breaks and the reality of what it has cost them versus what it can do quickly sets in, especially when they get that credit card bill.

Granted you will not get many brave souls that will admit publicly to how foolish they have been but privately is a different matter.

IDG News translates a new Economic Daily News report that claims a 7" iPad will indeed be launched by Christmas of this year.
The Economic Daily reports that Taiwanese companies have won a number of component contracts for the iPad 2. Chimei Innolux will supply 7-inch LCD screens, which use the same IPS (in-plane switching) technology found in the original iPad, which improves viewing angles and color on LCD screens. Touchscreen technology for the screens will come from Cando Corporation, the report says.

While talk of a 7" iPad has been circulating for some time, it has recently regained the spotlight with a report from iLounge earlier this month. iLounge offered the above mock-up and suggested the 7" iPad would launch later this year or early next. Meanwhile, Digitimes also reported on the likelihood a 7" iPad just last week.

I still use mine on a daily basis and have found I turn my main PC on a lot less. For the price is has been more than worth it for me.

Why can't you just appreciate some people can get some great use out of the iPad?

But your post states that you have been using your main PC a lot less. This indicates that you already have a device that can do all the things the iPad can do and more besides and that what you have actually done is simply trade one device for another and spent a good deal of money in doing so. A bit like buying two cars for the journey to work when clearly one would do the job more than adequately. As far as I can see the iPad brings nothing new to the table. P.S. I'm glad you don't handle my finances.

I must try taking my desktop on to a bus with me :p

Personally I needed something portable to supplement my gaming rig. I thought about a netbook or ultraportable, but models with great battery life, a WXGA resolution screen, Windows 7 Home Premium, 2GB+ of RAM and a good keyboard the price isn't much different from an iPad (around £400). So I went with the iPad. It's smaller, lighter and has a better screen.

So what.

Next you will be saying getting a smart phone is pointless because everything you can do on that you can do on with a laptop and a £10 PAYG phone from your local supermarket. :o

I find these posts about people using their PC's a lot less now they have their iPads really funny. Its as if the iPad has replaced the PC!

I still use my PC as much as i did before i got my iPad.

I use my iPad when im out or when im just being lazy on the bed. Other than that i dont really use it. Its a mobile device!

It doesnt have a full blown keyboard. Doesnt have a tab key which buggs me! Cant download on to it (certainly not 1080p stuff from newsgroups!). Cant use my 20Mb BB connection to the max on it.

Newsgroups + Torrents + Broadband does not equal iPad.

I'll tell you what its good for:
- Writing or replying to the odd email at your leisure.
- Viewing the internet at your leisure.

Its just like the iPhone then (just bigger)

Those that do use their PC's a lot less probably didnt really use their PC's much in the first place.

Photoshop speaks the truth :p Though I'm on PC way to much anyway lol

Photoshop speaks partly the truth ;).

The iPad is so much more than an email and internet.

Yes it does both of them very well, but on mine I have most of my entire book collection (apart from 2 authors which will come soon) some 200 books and growing either with IBooks or kindle, T.V series, Movies, Music, Games, Photo's, all of which are always with me, I don't have to curse and wish I had something to do or read on the airplane or in the hotel room or even at home.

Yes, whilst I appreciate that all this is on the PC as well, it is so much more convenient on the Ipad especially whilst travelling, yes a laptop or netbook will do the same things and more, but they don't have a 10 hour battery.

It is a big iPhone with out the calling facility, and a very expensive one at that, but I couldn't justify the expense when it was first launched, but now I have one I wouldn't be without it.

And my PC still gets used as much as it did before I got the iPad, I just now don't have the need for a laptop, the iPad does everything I (notice I) used a laptop for, I don't think it would suit everyone but I think it is a great bit of tech.

The netbook can do far more though. I think many early adopters will be very dissatisfied by the time the next generation model is released. Question is why do you need something portable, is it need or want? I have been using computers for the last twenty years and have always managed without portability. Even hardened industry insiders claim it is about 15% to expensive for the UK market and is poorly spec'd.
