Wine Suggestions - any ideas?

They are never cheaper than £9 or so from anywhere but go up to, well, silly money really.

Buy a bottle for yourself and try it, if you have the time/money/inclination - they are generally excellent bottles even at the "cheap" end.

no time :(

majestic oddly have nothing over ~£11 for a bottle, no more expensive versions!

Not C du Pape. Unless you're confident he's a Rhone man, that is.

Someone noted Chablis goes well with curry. It does indeed.

£30 on a red, is it definitely going to be had with curry?

If not I would procure him:

2006 Chateau du Tertre which should be about £28, Cru Classe from Margaux, was delicious when I had it and it was accessible in spite of being young. Forget 2003 or 2005 for under £30 really, although yes 9/10 and 10/10 years respectively.

Perhaps have a look at the second labels of the Cru Classes. I think you should be able to find some in the store you're going to. Among them are some top class wines. Also many of them aren't necessarily for keeping either. I've just been on majestic webby and you can get the Ducru-Beaucaillou 2nd label for £25. '06 St. Julien. I would go and buy this for myself *** the boss lol. But that would be superb.
You could try the Tourelles de Longueville , however I found it somewhat closed.

Fleuries are always a good bet as they drink nicely and fall nicely into your price range. Not great curry wines though I'd suspect. Also you could get some Volnays in that price range as well I think.

Hope that helps.

Wine is very difficult to buy for someone unless you know specifically what they like. It's very easy to spend silly money on a rubbish bottle too. £30 could get you a bottle no better than a £5 bottle from the supermarket in some cases.

Châteauneuf-du-Pape is very much a 'name drop' wine that people suggest all the time because it has a cool name. There's some cheap and nasty ones out there, so buy from a quality wine merchant. Shops like Majestic sometimes have a person that is clued up and really knows what they're talking about so it's well worth enquiring, but I generally find small merchants to be better than these large chains. I've also found Waitrose have some very good quality and well priced wine too.

Wine and curry is an odd combination so don't go for a too acidic whites or a tannin rich red or anything that is relatively expensive, it will be wasted, especially on a very hot curry. I certainly wouldn't drink a £30 bottle with it. Perhaps try a German Riesling, they do tend to cope well with the spicier foods. Avoid sparkling wine with curry too.

Sensible post is sensible.

I agree with you Justin: I'd not have wine with curry or go with a name drop wine.

It won't definitely be with a curry, just know he likes them so it was a starting point :)

Pirramimma something or other red :)

I forget what it was we had, but it was damn good.

Cool.
After a short conversation with 2 of the staff, went for a Cru Classe.. Chateau Batailley 2001.
Given i had to buy 6 bottles and it was closing time i managed to get 10% off (not 6 bottles of this mind! but the other 5 took it to just over £60 in total) :D

I now have 5 bottles of wine (3 red, 2 white) to drink! Last day at work tomorrow, so might have a couple of glasses after work :D
