Still sitting on the fence...

Current dilema, do I go for one 27" or U2711 or two 24" U2410s if I can squeeze them on my desk....

For photographic, general and some gaming (FPS and Sim mainly) do you think the extra screen space of 2 monitors would be better than one biggie? I have a 5870 graphics card and wonder which will give me the best experience?

Help!!!

Thanks.

This is a common question people might ask themselves. Personally I find 27 inches a very good size if you're after something large and you have the space and money. They are both fantastic screens but I'd go for the single 27 incher. Reason being you will get better performance in games, lower power consumption, fewer power sockets required and importantly no annoying central bezel. When considering two monitors the central bezel is a big issue.

Out of the two options the 27" monitor would get my vote. Two monitors just don't work for gaming, especially in FPS games where the crosshairs would be where the two bezels touch.

However, there is a third option... For around £750 (£100 cheaper than the 27") you could buy three U2311s. After all, you do own the 5870 eyefinity graphics card.

While probably not the best option for photographic work, three screens would give you the best gaming experience, and if you are into sim racing/flying, it's a must!!! (providing you have a large desk).

I guess your choice depends on what you do most. Photographic work or gaming...

Good luck with your decision. :)

Also bare in mind the U2311H is not broad gamut so depending on the colour space you want to use this could be an issue. For gaming it is certainly an issue - I love broad gamut monitors for gaming but it's down to your personal tastes.

I personally would go for 2 screens because I find it way more productive. Plus it also means you won't need to upgrade graphics card to cope with the native resolution of the 27inch screen when gaming.

As for gaming using two monitors, I'd stick to just using the one and having other applications on the other.

The 5870 can handle resolutions up to 2560x1600 (including the U2711s 2560x1440) over DVI. It would be pretty shocking if it couldn't!

Ah yes now it makes more sense. :D That is a pretty hefty resolution to be honest and it needs some serious pixel-pushing power. :)

I'll be reviewing it in October with any luck on a system with a single overclocked Radeon 5850. Should be entertaining. :D

No doubt it can display 2560 x 1440, the fact is when displaying these resolutions while playing the latest titles, the fps hit would be quite significant.

Thats why I have decided not to get the u2711. As good as it may be, my PC is used as a entertainment media device. I have no interest in photoshop or any other kind of workbased application that require that amount of real estate.

I think 1920 x 1200 (1080) will be enough for me for the next few years.... and maybe beyond

I can't give really give the best of answers here as I own neither combination however I do have the wfp3008 that houses 2560x1600 and as such I'd personally opt for the 2710. Yes you will see hits in games but you can always run at 1080p for gaming on that screen which will still look stunning. 2x 24" screen are all all but as has been said, you'll find split screen gaming a nightmare with the bezels being in the centre...

most modern games will run fine @ 2560x1600/1440 with a 5870

only ones you'll have problems with are Arma II, Metro 2033 and maybe Crysis

Arma 2 is one poor engine - that's actually the only game I use to test my monitors that doesn't work properly on my system, regardless of settings.
