Am I mad to even think of replacing my 5970 for a gtx 480? I have been watching a lot videos compare the 2 cardz and the gtx480 seem to have a better image quality then the ati 5970.

Am I right or wrong?

Thanks

i doubt that 480 has better image quality and its far behind 5970 so yes u are mad.

5*** should have better image quality as the antistrophic filtering algorithm does not have angles compared to nvidia.

as users of both nvidia and ati image quality from ati was more superior for me

The 5970 is the better card, stick with it. The only reason you should want to go for a 480 is if you're having issues with multi gpu, xfire, drivers, etc and even then it should still be solvable.

As a pc gamer, it would really grate me that I owned the most powerful gpu on the market yet I couldn't play the latest big game ie mafia 2 with all the bells and whisltles on ie physx- you have all that gpu power but when playing mafia 2 it wont look much different than if you'd bought it on a console.

The whole point of pc gaming for me is that you do get the bells & whistles for all the money you spend. So I'd either get a gtx 480 or at least get a physx card running.

Says the man with a single 275 :), great looking slide show & the OP didn't say anything about that game or even mention Physx in general because you could use that reason any time anyone just asked for an ATI card.
Don't buy an ATI card it cant run Physx likes its the most important thing in a gfx card.

It boils down to the fact that the hd5970 and the gtx 480 are currently the best cards ati & nvidia produce. However, the top ati will NOT be able to play mafia 2/batman or even streetfighter 4 with the graphics settings the nvidia card will.
Therfore in my opinion, the ati card will not offer me as good/complete a gaming experience.

Btw, I'm currently stressing out trying to work out wether I should buy a cheapy 2nd hand gtx 275 for sli or a gtx 480 so I can play mafia 2 without it looking like its on a ps3/360:D;)

Streetfighter 4?

As for the rest, PhysX marketing is designed to make you feel like you're missing out on something special. You really really aren't.

I mentioned sf4 because with an ati card you could only goto x8aa whereas you could goto x16qaa- wether its worth it is a different debate.

To be honest I agree that physx is nothing special- its just a crappy situatuon where I feel pc gamers are being held ransom by nvidia if they want to play eagerly awaited titles with full effects.
I know the debris effects or the steam/smoke effects probably arent 100% accurate but I do think they add to the atmosphere of the games- its just a con that you have to buy nvidia to get them! I mean can you imagine if bmw suddenly claimed the full rights to be the only manufacturer of 4 wheeled cars and mercedez and the rest had to go round making posh-robin reliants lol its insane!:)

1) we are not asking you.
2) streetfighter 4
3) if the only difference you can tell between consoles & pc gfx is the physx then you need your eyes testing or you need to lean to adjust your gfx setting above the level of a console.

Your splitting hairs for the sake of argument to a silly level.
And i can run SF4 at 32xAA like it matters anyway.

I'm guessing you can run 32xaa using control panel? cos I couldn't go above that using in-game settings:)

I appreciate you have a different view to me, I'm only 'splitting hairs' because we're talking about top-end gpus where you expect great performance whichever you choose so your buying decision falls to the extras eg physx/tesselation performance- again, only in my opinion.

If I've missed the point again please be patient with me as I've only recently got into the world of custom pc's:)

I have 2 of the most expensive consumer gfx cards after the Asus Ares & physx/tessellation & neither DX11 came into the equation because there is just not enough games making any useful use of them from conception to this very day for them to become a factor.

The only game out of the 130 that i have that i would miss out in playing in DX11 is Dirt2 & thats because it gives a shaper image. i could not careless about the tessellation in it.

And the point is in your opinion & its not your opinion on physx/tessellation that the OP is asking about.
If the majority had your thinking on physx/tessellation then we would not be talking about it because the majority would have second cards for physx with hacked drivers.

Amen to that brother :D

It may not be important to you, but if you're getting the extra eye candy at the same price point as a similar performing ATi card it does beg the question "why wouldn't you buy Nvidia?"

I bet you couldn't tell the difference between x8 AA and x16QAA though?

Additionally, you seem to be under the impression that physics effects are specific to nVidia PhysX, when they in fact aren't, that's why I think PhysX is crappy, because they showcase effects that don't need to be done on the GPU and act like it's new and innovative. It only takes playing a few games with Havok Physics to realise that PhysX is a scam where nVidia is trying to give you reason to buy another card.

Everything you see in PhysX games has done before just as well (and better if you look at Crysis) on the CPU. PhysX could be great, but it's being used in such a terrible way, there will never be game changing inplementations of PhysX because no one is willing to make a game that only runs on nVidia hardware, any dev that does so is cutting out half of their target audience potentially.

Its not similar performing & when the phySx is turned on the performance will be nowhere near.
And it not like the Op is not aware of physx & its no better than a sales man telling you what you need when you didn't even ask about it.
And on top of that even a single 480 is not enough or you would not be using that 260 with it.

S"OI you need physx"
C"But i didn't ask for it"
S"You need it anyway because i like it"
S" Mafia 2 uses it"
C" But im not going to play Mafia 2"
S"Buy it anyway"

Because the effects are crap and can be either recreated using software available to both ATI and Nvidia, or ran by CPU, because Nvidia cards draw a lot more power, create more noise and heat as hell? I mean they are good cards but they have them flaws. And it's not right to recommend someone replacing a better performing card with a worse performing one. Sure, if you're buying a new card, you MAY consider PhysX as one of the pros. It's no biggie for me and I'd imagine anyone with dedicated PhysX cards would agree (where you can really see if the difference is worth paying attention to it). Not to mention that buying Nvidia cards BECAUSE of PhysX is a way of supporting Nvidia with their egocentric tactic of keeping alive the engine that will never be fully developed.

You can get 470 SLi at a similar price point as the 5970 which is arguably better performance? Granted you're going to lose performance turning on PhysX, that goes without saying.
