Just went GTX 280 SLI...

I have recently gone from GTX285 SLi to a single GTX480.

The SLi setup was faster in most scenarios, but the the extra RAM of the 480 is very welcomed in some games a my minimum frames are up too.

Some initial results:

System Info
Latest Nvidia Drivers (258.96)
Core i7 920 @ 3.6 GHz
6GB RAM @ 1444 MHz
1 x BFG GTX 280 OC
1 x ASUS GTX 280
1900 x 1200 resolution
Note: Have not oc'd the Asus so clocks reverted to stock for SLI test

3D MARK 06 SCORES

Non SLI: 19,283
SLI: 22,389

Analysis: Not surprised by this - was not expecting wonders from 06 in terms of SLI scaling.

Mafia 2 Demo

Non-SLI: 51 FPS Average
SLI: 59 FPS Average

Analysis: Appalling at first glance, not tried the PhysX option yet.

Crysis (All settings HIGH)

Non-SLI:
Run 1 - Min (25.01) Max (49.94) Ave (39.27)
Run 2 - Min (25.01) Max (55.18) Ave (42.22)
Run 3 - Min (25.01) Max (55.18) Ave (42.23)
Run 4 - Min (25.01) Max (55.18) Ave (42.23)

SLI:
Run 1 - Min (49.71) Max (80.98) Ave (62.51)
Run 2 - Min (49.71) Max (89.23) Ave (70.74)
Run 3 - Min (49.71) Max (89.23) Ave (71.06)
Run 4 - Min (49.71) Max (89.23) Ave (70.90)

Analysis: This is more like it!

Hopefully more benches to follow...

Don't expect wonders from Mafia 2 and SLI if you have PhysX on - the PhysX workload gimps potential SLI performance - tho it should still be slightly higher and a lot smoother to play.

3D Marks 06 being highly CPU dependant I'm suprised you saw even as much gain as you did. Resident Evil 5 benchmark is another good test.

Yep, 06 thrives on highly clocked quads, with my i7 at 4ghz and a single gtx 280 clocked at 714/1504/1200 my score was 21.600 ono, sadly that card died on me. Havent clocked or tried 06 yet though with the 275 sli setup.

Unfortunatly all my CPU will take on this board. (It will do 4gig stable but needs more voltage than I'm happy with).

So i7 even at 3.6gig + GTX280 SLI isn't doing too badly.

I have had dual gtx280 in SLI for well over a year and I love them BTW I HAVE for instance GTA In maxed out Resolution and I can hear the 2 gpu Fans kicking in :-)
always used Rivatuner to do the controlling off GPU fans. bought my first one august 08 for 259 pounds then shortly afterwards they went to 300 + for 6 months ! and october last bought my second GPU off bay.

Had a bit more of a play around tonight. Tried some real games and noticed the dreaded microstutter on one of my favourites - Unreal Tournament 3.

When I bump the AA up to 16xQ it seems to be much better but anything lower and its juddery as hell.

Did you have vsync enabled with UT3? vsync + SLI can make some games very juddery (but its not "microstutter" as such).

Ive never experienced any stuttering with sli, ive heard it can happen, but most times ive heard of it has been with crossfire users, something i cant comment on myself as ive never used a single ati card let alone crossfire.
