What resolution are you running at? Anything below 1920x1200 with modern games on max settings will be utterly destroyed by a single 5870, at least as far as I know![]()

Call of Pripyat should have even higher requirements me thinks? It's a relevant comparison if the engine used is the same.

Overclocked 5850s in CF will perform the same as 5870CF.
So get one 5850 and overclock it and cf it?
Actually it's as simple as get two 5850s, Crossfire them, overclock both with voltage set to 1.15V (stock 5870) and clocks to 850/1200. Check stability and temps to be on the safe side. Usually you can squeeze some 50MHz more at this voltage anyway. Performance difference will be within 5% margin of favouring 5870 clock for clock.
