Hi guys

looking to get a new moniter, 22"

mainly for gaming, would the new LED ones be better than the lcd? if so which one, thanks

How much are you looking to spend?

I wouldn't get too worried about LED, LED is just the backlight technology (replacing CCFL) - the panel technology is still LCD.

+1 if its anything remotely fast. 2209wa if your a wow noob or something ;)

Common sense! :D

Never gamed on a 2209wa, eh?

Obviously it can't be as smooth as a 120hz TN in very fast games, but in my experience it still does very well and at the same time has far superior colours and viewing angles.

After what is now the... 6th, I think... IPS panel I've tested. I agree. Better experience for gaming, overall, despite the lower responsiveness. Some people just need something to blame for a sub-par performance in games. ;)

Its just my opinion that you have to simply not know any better to play on an s-ips panel in a first person shooter and think it rocks.

If anyone wants to disagree then fine..! the very same people say "i just enable vsync and its well smooth" :p these people don't even realise what this has done to their mouse movement/responsiveness etc...and to them.. "negative accel" may aswell be some small town in south wales :D

One day a 120hz S-ips panel will come out..and it'll be an almost perfect compromise for 95%+ of people. It'll be a great day!

Just to throw this into the mix... I know a lot better. I have used monitors that are one to several orders of magnitude more responsive than even the latest and greatest TN panels so I have an excellent spectrum of panels to compare with. But really it is down to personal preference, and it would be a blatent lie to claim that a smooth gaming experience isn't desired. At the same time it would be imprudent to suggest that people don't want great colours. Flipping what you've said on its head, you could say the same about people who are pleased with the image quality of their TN panel. They are not experienced enough to 'know any better'.

IPS panels haven't been married with 120Hz for a reason - '120Hz' is a very simple part of a far more complex equation when considering the responsiveness of a panel. Just chucking in 120Hz on an inherently 'slow' panel isn't going to help. Also, E-IPS and P-IPS panels I've used have been an improvement on the old S-IPS panels.

I just fail to see any argument against 120hz in one of these panels as the difference between 60hz and 120hz on the same panel is absolutely night and day. What possible cons could there be?

The main argument against it is the reason it hasn't yet been adopted - the panels themselves are simply too unresponsive for 120Hz to be a real advantage. Yes, you will get more 'frame rate juice' - but all this will do is exaggerate the hangovers from the slower response time. Don't get me wrong I think a 120Hz would be attractive if priced correctly, but the difference is simply not night and day if you're talking about 60Hz vs. 120Hz on an IPS panel.

If you want a real night and day difference - wait for OLED displays. These were the ones I was referring to that were 'several orders of magnitude' more responsive than any current LCD. And that is of course only the very tip of the OLED iceberg.
