Bloody typical, everything was nice and sorted with the car - come down this morning to find the passenger window has been smashed and the ususal goodies - stereo, ipod, cds and oddly a pair of gloves all gone.

Didn't need the car today which is good but its just so bloody annoying! Problem is the council are building new flats across the road and have removed all the street lighting so it's pitch black down there at night :( The building site has also been attracting attention of Exeters travelling community, they've nicked stuff like bricks a few times...

Police have asked not to disturb anything if I can and they'll be out tonight.

No advice or anything needed really (unless anyone knows how to track down these scumbags), just needed a rant!!

One quick question though - obviously going to have to go through insurance as there's a reasonable amount of damage to the door and the stereo wiring is now non existent.

Being a cheap car, what is the likelihood of it being written off?

yeah it is, very. Im not hugely bothered, its one of those things about living in a city. Its just the hassle of sorting it all out thats annoying me.

Anyway, seeing as it appears to be the done thing now, how can i best profit from this situation? Could i say the shock gave me whiplash?

Sorry to hear about that but your gloves don't fit me at all, you have weird hands!

Oh sorry iaind, I hope the scum is caught and flogged mercilessly ...of course they wont be though ...but one can hope.

happened to me last week went to my runabout (pug 306) and the drivers door had been bent back.

however in my case they had gone through the entire car left all doors and boot unlocked and not stolen a single thing.

The handbrake was off, my snap on 1/2" drive ratchet, socket set and my breaker bar were all left as was the hydraulic jack in the boot. Stereo (faceplate removed) also not touched.

So they left me with a car with body damage thanks very much !

As long as people keep their ipods, digital cameras, sat navs, expensive stereos in their cars there will be smashed windows, you can't help it.

When I used to live in Putney I got broken into twice, it's so damn annoying, all the glass everywhere, all the cleaning etc, I had nothing stolen as I never left anything expensive in the car but damn those scambags!!!! Also it was nothing unusual to see cars with broken windows in Putney area every few days/weeks. Now I relocated to Surrey and it's much better, haven't seen a single broken window yet.

Frustrating hey :( Never had this happen to me yet but inevitably it'll be my turn one day...hope you get it sorted without too much additional cost.

While this sort of thing really sucks..i'm finding it hard not to at least smile at the glove jokes! :o

Emotional damage
Shame about the golf clubs & laptop ;)

Seriously, I know the contents of the car are sometimes limited by your insurer, if they are check your home insurance they may cover you as well

Ouch, bad luck, surely they wont bother to repair it if its significant? :(

This is one of the many many reasons i live right in the sticks with cars parked a decent way off road and about 4000 security lights lighting all of my drive/house linked to a single PIR on entry - paranoia, but it seems to work! :/

If only everybody could do this though?! :p

Until you get something someone wants to steal to order, and they stick a tracker on your car and eventually make a planned and coordinated attack and grab in the middle of the night. I don't want to worry you or anything, but you should add guard towers, dogs, men with guns ...a moat (not the Raul kind, they are a bit ...unpredictable), palisade walls etc :)
