*Official OMG I got my 460 thread*

Got mine today although i had to take my xfi out since it was restricting the air to one of the cards.. should have thought of that before.

i think 940 is a bit of a fabrication. sure they might whack it to 900+ bump up the voltage and run 3dmark, everything seems fine so they say. wow look at my Overclock!?!

but i doubt its OCCT GPU stable with zero errors over a 10-20minute run.

its like i just read this review of an Asus CU:

http://benchmarkreviews.com/index.p...k=view&id=577&Itemid=72&limit=1&limitstart=16

thats because its not a stable OC!!! i can run at many high MHZ and not get huge artifacting in 3dmark but that doesnt mean its rock stable overclock... its very misleading when they say hey could hit 850 etc and not all reviews are genuine and dont say that they did infact see some minor artifacting at that speed/voltage.

Im begining to agree with that now. Mine start artifacting at 890 Mhz, even at 880 Mhz, I still saw a few noticable ones. Dropping back to 875 Mhz everything is clear with no artifacts or stability problems.

People whack up the clocks as high as they can to get through a benchmark and post their score, but they probably arent going to be 100% stable.

I would think that 850 Mhz is the sweet spot for the custom cooled MSI / Gigabyte / Asus ones, any more than that is down to luck, any less is bad luck.

Cheers, just done a quick run of vantage.

PPU enabled is considered cheating in Vantage with Nvidia cards. I got 33000+ with default vantage settings, but the extra 30k over your score would be of because the I7's hyperthreading, which is also pointless outside of Vantage. Lots of enthusiast sites that collect databases of scores dont accept Nvidia results with PPU enabled.

I like your setup though, very clean. I dont have vents underneath the motherboard tray for my VGA power cables, well I have one, but its blocked by the EATX motherboard, and only just manages to fit the motherboard power cable through it :(

OCCT is far to extreme, getting no artifacts running FurMark and Kombustor is a pass for stability, and running a proper game it would be GTA4 being the most intensive.

Core clock of
850 is stable of no artifacts at v1.087 on everything
875 is stable of no artifacts at v1.087 on everything except OCCT
890 is stable of no artifacts at v1.087 on everything except OCCT
900 is stable of no artifacts at v1.087 on everything except OCCT & GTA4

So for me I'm now running it at 890 as I get no artifacts, also crashing was never an issue.

...Until a new game that comes out that pushes your card harder and then it's just plain unstable again.

...or you go to run anything CUDA based and suddenly you're getting computation errors all over the place.

...or

If it's not 100% stable in everything, it's not stable. Just because it doesn't crash most of the time doesn't mean that it won't one day just crash right in the middle of something epic.

I'd just run it at 850 and be happy in the knowledge that my card was rock solid in anything I wanted to throw at it.

My crazy cooling:

Theres an Akasa exhaust blower underneath the side fan too, going to test now to see if the temps are any lower any lower.

I can't currently clock my Gigabyte 460 over 750 without artifacts appearing in ATI Tool. :(

It'll be a shame if I happen to have one of the only 460's that won't overclock well. :(

Ouch, my temps went up in Vantage from 80 degrees max to 87 with that side fan installed!

It seems to ruin my cooling, not improve it, removing it now.

Note to all - The best way to keep an SLI / Crossfire setup cooled is to have good case airflow, and a 3 slot spacing between the two cards. Putting anything in between them, or only having a 2 slot spacing creates a huge heatspot.

The gigabyte cards with two fans would probably be fine in a normal 2 slot spacing, but most others would get burning hot.

Even the idle temps went up to 46 degrees with the side fan installed, with it removed its back down to 38 degrees, probably because theres no heat accumulating and getting stuck between the cards now.

My girlfriend has very kindly offered to buy me a 460 for my birthday next month. Has anyone tried out the Gainward GTX 460 GS 2GB yet? I cant seem to find reviews for this card at all and i want to know, is there much of a difference in performance between the 2GB and 1GB models (Gigabyte especially as ive had my eye on that one too). I game at 2560 x 1600, so would the extra memory help out much with getting more fps at such a high res? If the performance isnt much different i'll hop on the Gigabyte wagon.

I've a Gainward 460 GS 1GB, which is reasonably quiet. You can get a 2gb version of that. Can't be that much difference in noise & temp.

I have no problems with my Palit 460 GTX no heat or noise issues hope that clarify s this to

people cheap and cheerful and works like a trogen

Are the gigabyte 460 totally silent, at least when idle? I mean no noise at all, the only sound from my PC at the moment is a whisper from the corsair PSU. Many of reviews state that any given card is silent, but when you get it, it is anything but.

yes i concur. the last thing u need is to be an hour into a horrendous game of COH only to BSOD or get an error on nv something and a Crash to Desktop...

i run at 715 in windows and then just load my 850/ 1.050v profile when i am about to load a 3d game up.

I can't currently clock my Gigabyte 460 over 750 without artifacts appearing in ATI Tool.

what voltage is the card at standard clocks? what do you change the voltage to when u OC it?

i have had 5x GTx 460's now with a rangr of VID some need a bump to get to 800mhz.

Are the gigabyte 460 totally silent, at least when idle?

my PC is not 'silent' but i can assure you the Gigabyte and the MSI are both deathly quiet. especxally at idle.
