Catalyst 10.8 is scheduled for 25th or 26th August

the stupid thing is idle when oc'd is 400/1100

when flash plays, this drops to 400/900 when you would least expect it to clock down!

The clock management is all fubar. Sure afterburner can be used, but something as simple as this should not require the user to manually set different profiles.

Yeah well one more reason to stay with Nvidia. Another reason is downclocking in games, Nvidia let you override power management features for all games or a single game, ATI on the hand give you nothing.

Yeah, this is total bull**** and I mentioned it with the release of Catalyst 10.6. It doesn't make any sense and is badly implemented. Also my overclock doesn't like Flash Hardware Acceleration so I had to turn it off. Seems like Afterburner unofficial overclocking causes it.

Just out of curiosity, which is the best current ATi driver for a 5850? I've recently purchased this card and i'm using the latest drivers, if there's an older driver that performs better then I want it :P

10.4A - just uploading it for you too.

some also say 10.4B but i've not tried those.

Older drivers do not perform better, look up some reviews at least. The 10.4s give the least issues though, I jump from them to 10.6 and then 10.7a shortly.

They do if you use Crossfire. It is completely broken in the 10.7 release.

If all ATI manage is to bring back the crossfire performance enjoyed before the 10.6 release then a lot of people will be happy.

i used 10.4a for a few weeks then 10.4b
i found 10.4a was fine but needed a hotfix to get fast loading times in BFbc2
10.4b is what i still use now, nice fast map loading for bc2 but i found this is the first driver where ati upped the 2d clock from 157/300 to 400/1250 (1250 is the factory OC on the memory)

I also have 5850. I am currently on 10.2. Where do I download 10.4, I don't see it anywhere.

heres a link for 10.4b

May I ask what problems you guys are having on the latest driver?

As I have a 3870x2 and I have no problems playing games maybe its something I don't notice.. as my games do not crash.

And supposedly ATI are recoding drivers for 6 series which will have a new look

I don't give a monkeys about the idle clocks speeds, what speed the RAM is running at with flash. Everything works so I don't care.

I don't see why the clocks bother people if it just works.

Higher idle temps, power consumption in the long run? Why cause this if can be avoided?

my cf setup idles 15c cooler with 157/300 clocks thus reducing cpu and mobo temps as well, right now im idleing at 46c, with the new higher 2d clocks (400/1250) i idle at 61-62c which i see no need for

((ta magic, looks like my link was 10.4b so i edited it))

ATi cards have 3 basic clock profiles:

Idle - self explanatory; ~157MHz GPU, 300MHz Memory
Bluray/AVIVO - For when playing dvds, H/W accelerated videos and flash; ~400MHz Gpu, 900MHz Memory (hence the mem clock drops to 900MHz on youtube videos)
3D - Games; max clocks

It works as its supposed to, dont see what the complaint is about
