Behind you... Naked!
Right, I have just downgraded my server so I can use its bits for anothergaming PC on my lan.

The snag is, that it occasionally jerks and I have not been able to solve it.

The system :-

Gigabyte GA-MA78G-DS3H
Phenom 9950 black @ Stock
4 x 1GB Geil 6400
Point of View 8800GTS 320MB
Audigy 2 ZS + LiveDrive

C: = 80GB Hitachi
D: = Seagate 500GB

R: = Pioneer 112 DVDRW
V: = Pioneer 112 DVDRW

Running off a 500w Ultra X Connect PSU

Currently running Windows XP64

I have of course tried Vista64 and I had the same issue.

The HDs are new but again, this issue showed its face when I was using the previous HD

Erm, I have also swapped out the PSU and the RAM.

So, I know that its not the HD, PSU and RAM or indeed the O/S that can be doing this.

But Im still unable to cure it.

Basically whats happening is that everythign seems to be absoluely fine, and then for some unknown reason the whole system would get jerky. I cannot say iof the whoel system is doing this or if its only when playing games, but playing MP3/FLAC/OGG Files with Winamp is fine, as is playing DivX Movies with KMP also fine too.

Im kind of wondering what I can look at next really?

Any thoughts.

The original Phenom series was pretty rubbish for gaming.

What was the other PSU you used? The 500w one you mention sounds like a generic crappy one so it could be the graphics card isn't getting enough power.

Tell me about it.

The games its struggling with however are the likes of NFS-U2 / UT Classic & UT2004, so not exactly the most taxing.

The UltraX Connect a Geriatric PSU - LOL I doubt it.

However, its certainly no spring chicken anymore... What else do I have?
Well, I was using a Tagan 850 and that did the same jerkyness.

I have of course dropped the large HDs as they are in my new server and this PC only has the 2 hence the not needing a big PSU, so the 500w should be plenty.

What else do I have though?

I will try some others but if a Tagan 850 does the same then its surely not the PSU.

Just had a look for that Ultra X PSU, looks like it was nice in 2004. :D Wasn't any brand I'd heard of so I thought it was some CIT/Arctic Power thing. :p

But yeah if it was still having issues with the Tagan then I guess it rules out power problems.

I have only ever had one issue with the Ultra-X Connect.

No, two...

Firstly that the 24 pin connection does not work, and never has. No biggie I suppose, but an irritant none the less and can I find anywhere that I can buy a replacement? NOPE!

Secondly, and again, this is only a minor issue that is not the PSU on its own but rather a combination of incompatibles, but some time ago, when my main Mobo was the MSI Neo2, the IDE ports, the Floppy Port and the ATX port are all right next to each other and the thickness of the Ultra cables didnt allow for much flexibility and they puished into the IDE cables, which in turn pushed into the floppy, which in turn stopped the fan on my Freezer64.

As I said, a combo of issues, but the cables are very solid and not very flexible and this kind of issue still shows its ugly head no matter what Setup I have it in.

But, its got one of the smoothest and most perfect power output I have ever seen, and I have had Corsair, OCZ, Tagan, Hyper and Antec PSUs ( and still have actually ) and given a choice, Id jump at another UltraX before any of those others any day,

Hmm..

Ok, I just tried out a few changes in the system.

Firstly , I stuck in my OCZ700 - I only bought this a few weeks ago, and its in my main PC... The main PC has a hell of a lot more inside it than this Phenom and handles everythign just fine.

Still the same.

So, I tried a lesser card. I went to an X1800XT ( Cos I seem to be breeding these sods - I currently have 7 of them, and 2 X1900's and a crossfire 1900 so thats 10 in total )

Still the same.

Snot, what can it be then?

I know that it was said earlier on thatt he Phenom is a poor gamer but lets be honest... Its not bad enough to make 5 year old games jerk in any way is it? - not when single core CPUs a fraction of the power can handle them just fine.

Im at a loss really... Unless its the Mobo?

Try to remove the sound card and run onboard sound? maybe the sound drivers are scrwing something up.

The phenom was not THAT bad. It should handle older games more then fine.

Well, ok, I have not tried a different soundcard, and in the very same breath, I have recently had issues with this very card, so...

No, I know its not THAT bad. I actually quite like the thing.

I was referring mostly to a previous post.

pull the audigy, to test. i remember back in the day there being huge issues with some creative cards on via and ali chipsets - tho this was a loooong time ago. the symptoms - stuttering mostly

The HD
It started on the previous HD and this one is a brand new one.
Its unlikely to be HD, although again, at this stage, Im not ruling anything out.

Pull the Audigy
Yes, I have a number of Creative cards. I love them TBH and I really cannot fault them. However I have had a perfect card suddenly give me a headache for no reason, and this one is no exception. It used to be my main card in the PC downstairs and I have had it since its release I think and while its given me absolute pleasure to have, Its not been 100% for 100% of the time... Maybe this is one of its 1% times perhaps?

Anyway, its 3am and all I need to do now is get the ferrets all to bed and I can go to play about. No jobs on tomorrow so I will have a couple of hours to play

Have you tried running UT in safe mode ?? ALso do you have your network running at the same time as your gaming??

dont think anyone has mentioned this but

why run Windows XP64?

the gpu drivers where never particularly great for this you would be much better served with win7

SAFEMODE
Nope, or do you mean have I tried the compatibility mode/s, then yes, but its not only UT.

NETWORK
What would that have to do with it? - I have however disabled all the bits, including networking just in case, but nothing helped...

Why not?

I have Win7 on some PCs and XP64 on others. I have been using it since its launch. There is nothing wrong with XP64. Besides. I have had this issue with Win7 too.

No, I would not.

I had Win7 on it originally, I have gone to XP64 because I love XP64 and I simply fancied XP64 on it. I will of course put Win7 back onto it, thats a given, but my issues have nothign to do with what version of Windows I have.

--------------------

Anyway, putting the kaibosh onto the thread, I think I have found a solution.

The other day, it had forgotten the DVDs

I shut it down and they came back.

I was in the middle of piddling about on teh internet, and I put my foot down, when the PC crashed?

Anyway... long one short, I find that I have a molex to 2xSATA Power adapter, and one of the female holes is too big and very loose, so the pin is too slack ( A bloody mirror image of my life if ever there was one ) and so, I got a small screwdriver in there and took up the slack ( If only ) and so far its been fine.

I have a sneaky feeling that this jerkyness or slowdown is simply that

Its not been jerky at all since, so touch wood, that was it?
