iPhone 4 Battery and Charging

Hey guys just a couple quick questions...

1. When I got the iPhone 4 at the doorstep, as anyone excited would do, I quickly opened it, put the micro-sim in, powered it on and connected it to my computer via USB. Now, I haven't read about this anywhere but a couple people tell me that you should put it (or anything electrical, i.e. phones etc.) on charge for a while with it switched off when you get it bnib. Is this true? And if so, will it affect my battery now?

2. What are your battery lives like? I don't feel like I'm getting the best from it that was originally advertised...

have a read of: http://www.apple.com/batteries/iphone.html

1. Modern batteries are pre charged, and it won't hurt them to be used straight off. Lithium batteries charge, then trickle charge, and stop charging if left plugged in. You would be hard pressed to ruin the iphone battery this way. It's a good idea to 'cycle' the battery once a month or so by letting it run flat then fully charging it.

2. Very subjective depending on reception, what you do with your phone, what's running, how many apps use notifications, push/wifi/3G enabled, blah blah... lots of previous discussions here and all over the web. My iPhone 4 gives me a day with heavy use, 2 days with light use, 3-4 days with no use (and flight mode overnight).

Mine may not be as good as some claim, but I'm constantly at 1-2 bars where I live. It gets me through the day easily so that's fine for me. I suggest you don't get hung up on it too much :)

Too many people fret about batteries. Use the phone however you like - you aren't going to break your battery.

As above, 3G and Location Services [GPS] drink a lot of juice, so if you aren't using them - switch em off! 3G is especially bad for eating juice if you have poor 3G [the constant reconnecting/searching for signal eats a lot of power.]

I haven't looked at the small print, but generally the quoted battery time should be taken with a pinch of salt.

Mine is crap. Max use i can get is 4 hours. Dreadful Dreadful battery. Worst ever. 3G over, location services off, notifications off, brightness half way. Wifi off.

Pile of crap.

turn gps off
turn spotlight off
turn brigtness level right down ( to a dull but readable level )
turn off vibrate
close all app running in background ( its not asif they dont load up fast anyway )
remember to sleep the phone when not in use
happy days !
no problems here with my battery life, 100% charge will last me over 36+hrs, with moderate usage of all apps i have

how do I turn off background apps?

I'm having particular problems with TomTom app on my phone which I use but then it's left running in the background for a while, there's no exit button or nothing just have to press the 'home' button...

Either you're running your mouth off trying to get some attention, or your phone is broken, for which you are entitled to a repair or a swap. I guess some people just like moaning.

*** Totally uncalled for insult and rudeness ***

Something that will really drain the battery life is the phone constantly having to poll for a 3G signal if the area you are in has poor coverage. Switching from 3G to Edge to GPRS really eats up the battery life.

I'm happy with mine...

I've been doing full charges (with no drip charging) and letting the phone run down completely. Here's a shot taken today just before it died, and is typical of my battery's performance...

I've got everything on bar Notifications, and the phone is typically in a poor-signalled area.

Isn't it bad for the battery if it drops to 0%??? Perhaps a protective measure

probably find that 0% really isnt dead dead, but rather the cut off point that they've set to protect the battery?

Nismo, that is mental, i have to charge my phone at least once a day, today ive done so TWICE, but then its been used 9am till 11pm...
