Catalyst 10.8 is scheduled for 25th or 26th August

Higher idle temps, power consumption in the long run? Why cause this if can be avoided?

it can be avoided and is being avoided by the people who can be bothered to spend 10 minutes installing afterburner. no its not ideal, yes ATi should sort it themselves but until they do, *We* all have working solutions.

Tbh, its boring reading post after post of bitching about clock speeds every time a driver is released.

Yeah well one more reason to stay with Nvidia

lol.

ATi cards have 3 basic clock profiles:

Idle - self explanatory; ~157MHz GPU, 300MHz Memory
Bluray/AVIVO - For when playing dvds, H/W accelerated videos and flash; ~400MHz Gpu, 900MHz Memory (hence the mem clock drops to 900MHz on youtube videos)
3D - Games; max clocks

It works as its supposed to, dont see what the complaint is about

if you overclock, the standard profiles dont work. That's the complaint. My 5850 is slightly overclocked - runs at 900/1100. with this clock, the ram never runs slower than 1100 and the core will clock down to 400mhz and no less. this is why i use afterburner to set a 2nd 2d profile with standard clocks - that way when in 2d mode it clocks down as it should (157/300) and when afterburner detects 3d it ramps the clocks up to my O/C settings.

it's a fix for dodgy drivers but it works so...meh

yes it works as it should do as long as you dont have overdrive enabled, when you OC ur card using drivers later than 10.4b these idle speeds increase along with idle temps to the tune of 15c hotter. Thats what the complaint is about

You don't know what's the fuzz about because you don't overclock (I guess). If you did you would see how stupidly idle clocks are 400/whatever memory clock you overclock to and then they drop to 400/900 when Hardware Flash Acceleration kicks in (which doesn't make any sense because it idles at even higher clocks). Plus HFA and overclock causes an instant blue screen for me.

If you read the entire thread (or at least the first page), you'd realize I don't complain but rather argue that higher clocks "fix" isn't something we should be happy about.

I don't care tbh but a lot of people don't know about the solution and complain a lot. Then people who read up this **** start complaining about ATI drivers. This is only a bad publicity for ATI and its drivers team.

It's not only with Overdrive, I have Overdrive disabled and use Afterburner to set my overclock.

Does Catalyst control centre have an update feature?

On the Welcome page you have an option to "check the drivers update" but you are only redirected to the Graphics Drivers website. Then you have to select the model of the card and OS you want to install drivers on. After all you're being redirected again to Catalyst page where you get the drivers from. Installation is simple though, two clicks and you're done.

Thanks.

May I ask what problems you guys are having on the latest driver?

As I have a 3870x2 and I have no problems playing games maybe its something I don't notice.. as my games do not crash.

And supposedly ATI are recoding drivers for 6 series which will have a new look

I have no problems with performance or crashes whatsoever. Some people report (see ED's article "Some argue" for reference) problems with Crossfire setups, other do not say a bad word about the drivers. The only problem for everyone owning a 5*** series card maybe higher idle clocks when overclocking but that's of no concern with an easy fix.

if i have 10.4 A i can set my overclock profile in MSI.

And not having to worry about making a 2d profile for idle clockage?

And not worry about the idle clocks being 400/1000 like the newer ****ty drivers :(.

I hate that they changed it in the first place.

If you use Afterburner already, what's the problem with setting 2D profile as well? It takes some 10 seconds to do and works in the background as fan profile does.

When you set a 3D profile with afterburner, I found that it would ramp the clocks up to full speed with flash content or HD based content so it's not a perfect fix.

No it won't, it will freeze or usually even better - BSOD the system in my case :D And the clocks go up to 400/900 then. I'm talking an overclocked 5850 here.

hmm okay i guess il do that.

What fan profile do you use though stock?

My 5850 Idles at 36C lol. I duno if i should change it i guess il just monitor temps.

Set default clocks (725/1000 for me) as 2D profile and overclock as 3D profile.

Ahhh Kruga i got it to work.

As soon as i start a 3d applicatoin it ramps up to overclock clocks.

If i close it and go back to windows.

It goes back to profile 2 stock clocks which then puts uses all the usual idle clocks 157/300 etc etc.

As it isnt running OC.

:)

Great!

Yep, can live without it tbh. It's a major flaw though, even bigger than higher idle clocks. Will see if it stops from BSODing if I turn profiles off.

HD content on youtube looks like crap without hardware acceleration, ATI should respect the fact a lot of people who buy their mid to high-end parts overclock and their dodgy fix is not acceptable when you consider Nvidia have no problems at all in this particular area.
