I was wondering how many years should this last in todays gaming with 4gb ram..

could I just update the GPU frequently instead of my cpu/mobo?

I am considering getting a 460 or 5970 as currently have 3870x2 or i'll wait for the 6 series

(I was hoping 1-2 years)

It should last a few years yet, the q6600 is still a pretty potent cpu. A new gpu would be a nice upgrade for gaming.

1 - 2 years will do you fine mate. I had mine at 3.8 with 4GB PC2 8500.

The card was/is a 5870. I upgraded to the 920 with the same card yet 6GB at 1854MHz in triple channel.

Point is, I barely notice a difference gaming!

which have you selected one yet?

£650 for the graphics card and i'm currently in market for a monitor but I will be getting one with a high resolution like the dells

I'd hold out for the 6 series now especially since the 3870x2 you have probably does alright. Spend the money on a good monitor and worry about the gpu later.

My vote is good monitor, and second hand 5870.
My Q6600@4ghz/8GB/4870 X2/SSD combo is only just slower at loading Battlefield Bad Company 2 than my mate's I7 [email protected]/6GB/480GTX/Better SSD than mine. We're talking 2-3 seconds max difference in load times between maps. And we both play with basically all the settings maxed.
Loads of life left in the old Q6600's yet, paired with a good graphics card and an SSD will be the best bang for buck upgrade you could do. I'm assuming your clocking your Q6600 in the mid 3ghz range?

its 3.4Ghz mate should I get one of those 120hz monitors?

It'll be fine - been running my Q6600 overclocked from day 1

last 12 months or so at 1.575 VCore (bios) - 1.51 actual

on air - gets very hot too - but haven't had any problems
