295 vs 460

well all in all the GTX 295 is faster card, though FERMI cards such as GTX 460 have always seemed to have a 'minimum frate rate' advantage over other cards, only problem with the GTX 295s they are getting is the fact they aren't new cards and only have 3-month warranty. another point against the GTX 295 is the lack of DX11 support, but then again how many games need DX10, can't count many that will not run on older DX9 and still look just as good. :D

I'd go with the 460, and add another 460 if you want SLI later on.

A 460 would run a lot cooler than a 295 and even SLI 460's would run cooler and use less power.

actually as far as im aware GTX 295 don't suffer from any excessive heating and power consumption is pretty reasonable. :p

The GTX 295 is a MUCH faster card (have a look at this review).

However, the GTX 460 uses much less power, is DX11, has a much longer warranty and is quieter under load.

Which card is better for you is very much a personal choice, but the short 3 months warranty with the GTX 295 is a concern for me.

If your gonna be spending £200 anyhow put the little extra in and buy a GTX470 and clock it to 800MHz. Its roughly on par with the GTX295 then but has more consistant performance, newer features and performs much better in some games.

Well I went from a 260gtx to a 2gb 460 and the difference is very noticeable. There isn't a massive performance gain (but enough to up the detail settings), but it runs a lot cooler and quieter (it's also a much smaller card). My overclocks are more stable as well.

"Monsters" the 460 too its really not a great alternative card if your talking GTX295 league.

GTX470 or 5850 would be much better buys than the 295 at that price point - not outright faster but use less power, more consistant performance thats still in the same ballpark as the 295 and newer features, without having to rely on multi GPU scaling.

wasn't on about GTX 460, some dude mentioned upgrading from GTX 260 to GTX 460, and i was just wondering what the purpose of mentioning that is, since the GTX 260 isn't anywhere near as fast as the 295 we're discussing. :D

Just saying it monsters the GTX460 almost as much as it does a single GTX260 :P

i see, thats true. the only thing the GTX 295 lacks is DX11 support, but be honest is that a real concern in a world where most games still work perfectly fine with DX9. find it surprising that GTX 460/470/480 still find it hard to keep up with GTX 295/4870X2 in real-world gaming, just goes to show how much brute force those two have. :D
