I have found a new car I want (private) however the car is over 300 miles away, I'm going to look at it tomorrow and I have cash ready for it.

However if Im happy with the car and I want to buy it, whats the situation with my car insurance?

I have fully comp on my current car, so am I safe to drive this new car home if I do buy it?

You have to ring your insurer and ask them to change your car. They may charge an admin fee for this and your premium will go up or down resulting in a refund or another payment/increased payments.

You may have DOC cover though, which would let you drive it without doing that. Check your policy.

NO, NO, NO.

It absolutely will not - if you do this, you will be UNINSURED.

DOC does not cover cars owned by you. And if you've just handed over a pile of cash for a car and are about to drive it home.. its now owned by you!

You will need to ring the insurance company and get insured on the new car before you drive it away, as said above DOC will not cover you in this situation.

Do you ever tire of being right? :p

This is a bit of a pain in the bum, as my current insurers is a specialist who doesn't insure performance cars :(

My current car is classed as a "classic car" and thus I have insurance via a insurer who classes this as a classic car! They only offer insurance on 2 brands of car - Subaru isn't one of them.

Done that already - however I'm concerned that they will be closed by the time I get to the new car. I think the best option is to just pay for one of those 1 day insurance covers either way then I only lose a few quid.

I did that in the past. The best option and you are fully cover. Probably you could even get a cover on your mobile, just in case you will change your mind and decide not to but this car.

normally the DOC cover is applicable if you have no insurable interest in the car, the other car is insured, owners permission is gained and last one *gets ready to hide* is that its not used on a regular basis

Did all that come off the top of your head rather than having any basis in fact?
