Please spec me a sensible estate!

I've got an Octavia estate in Elegance trim and can recommend it, although I find it weird that anyone buying an estate would then set criteria of 'not that big' - that's kind of the whole point of estates! In hindsight if I were buying now I'd probably go for a Mondeo estate. Not a fan of the v50, friend has one and no matter what I try long trips in the passenger seat are hideously uncomfortable, it's also not that big inside and has a weird dash.

Octavia is a good shout but with the mileage criteria a petrol makes much more sense than a diesel which rules out 80% of the Octavia Estates on the market. To not avoid being dog slow it really needs to be a 1.8T and that narrows it down to needle in a haystack territory unless you go for the vRS which probably wouldn't be suitable.

What's a small estate? Isn't that an oxymoron?

No?

Why do people think estates are big? They're normally no longer than their saloon/hatch counterparts. Estate is just a body style, a good way of maximizing the potential space from the length available. Small estates do serve a niche purpose, normally surrounding animals

Fair enough, I didn't know that. I assumed most estates were longer, taller and boxier. Thanks for the correction :)

Actually most estates are longer than the saloon equivekent, if only by a few inches or so. Not enough for someone to crap their pants over it.

Also, I find parking and manoeuvring estates 1000 times easier than the same in saloons.

The difference is negligible in most cases though. Most estates are just squared off to provide a more practical load space. The exception tends to be the really small hatches like the aforementioned Clio. The boot of a small hatch is quite square anyway so they tend to be extended lengthways.

Look at the likes of the v50/s40 - almost exactly the same length but infinitely more practical
