Stupid ati drivers

Basically I've got media player on one of my screens with tutorial videos running and then UDK on my other screen (unreal development kit). For some stupid reason it down clocks my card to 400/900, like it does when you're playing flash content. So basically it's makes UDK really laggy. Custom 2d profiles doesn't make any difference because this seems to be some crazy hidden profile that kicks in just for video content.

Even when I'm not running a video catalyst reports there as being 0 gpu activity and it keeps jumping up and down between idle and load clock speeds. Maybe I could try some older drivers?

I think I'm gonna switch over to nvidia as soon as some new cards are released.

Power management works fine on a single 480, yeah I agree ATI's powerplay has caused some major issues for a number of people.

Read a few oddities lately with video and ati drivers. Some have suggested disabling hardware acceleration for video in CCC, was to do with YouTube video but may work for you.

How exactly do I do that?

Do you think I would have any luck trying to trade my 5850 for a 460 on mm? Or should I just hold out for some new cards before I jump ship?

How? By setting the 2d profile to the same speed as the 3d? Like I said, it's not actually the 2d profile it loads up. It's some 3rd profile that only seems to kick in for flash and video playback.

Navigate to C:\Program Files (x86)\MSI Afterburner, open MSIAfterburner CFG file with notepad, look for EnableUnofficialOverclocking = 0, change the 0 to 1 and save it, restart afterburner, make sure you have an overclock on and the clocks will not change even with flash content.

Which is the master screen the one with the UDK or the video player ?.

Put the video Player on the secondary screen.

it is on the secondary screen.

Can You have the UDK full screen as the player is taking priority.

Edit: just tried playing a game full screen on the main screen while the video was playing on the other & the clocks will remain 400/900 so that wont help.

Well my next question is whether this happens with nvidia cards? It's pretty silly I can't do something as simple as watching a video and running a 3d application.

Its not that common to be doing what your doing to be honest.
But its something that should be addressed.

Did you try this

Sorry, didn't see that. I'll try it now.

That stopped the clock dropping down but I'm still getting awful performance. GPU usage only goes up to 10% max and it stays at idle temps. If I launch the udk into game mode then it runs fine. :C

I guess I should look on the UDK forums.

mmmm, I uninstalled the drivers and used driver sweep. I then reinstalled them and it's a little better. It will go up to about 40% gpu usage. Still not perfect though. Confusing.

gone back to before now. I'm just about ready to throw this card out the window.

All right, I re installed the drivers AGAIN and it's gone back to using about 40% of the gpu which is better than originally but I still don't understand why it wont use 100%. I will test my friends 460 sometime this week and see what that's like.

Not all 3D programs games use 100%
