I'm going to be upgrading before too long but want to keep this system as a back-up. During my upgrade I want to keep my graphics card and add a second one for SLI - I have a 550W PSU that could be used in my old system along with an 7600GT, this would free up my Antec 650W to possibly put into the new system along with two 275 GTX.

So, in short, will a 650W PSU be enough for a O/C'ed i7 and GTX 275's in SLI? And if not what sort of size would be I be looking to install?

not totally sure,

When OCUK built my machine for me a year ago, and i asked for GTX280 SLI they said 750W Cosair was suffient i think it would really depend on how good the Antec is.

it prob is but itd mean psu running at high load, better to go for a 750W and give it more room as such, will allow the psu to work at better efficiency

My rig is meant to power up overclocked Crossfire 5850 and OCed i5 for years (plus watercooling and such). i7 uses more power, you're looking at 200W+ when overclocked under full load. GTX 275 uses 100W more in Furmark than 5850. I would get a quality 750W tbh.

i run a i7 at 4.2 2x overclocked 275's and watercooled 24/7 from a 850w toughpower and runs fine wouldnt recomend 650 and 750 proberly would be a bit close to full load

+1 for a good quality 750w psu, currently run gtx 275 sli and an i7 at 4ghz using a corsair HX850w.

You don't state which model Antec psu you've got, but if it's the Antec Signature 650w it would more than likely be up to the task. They're cracking psus with an enviable reputation.

The PSU is in my sig - Antec Earthwatts 650W
The system will be i7 or SandyBridge
I guess I'll be going for a 750W-800W after all the comments!

Thanks

would likely be fine with OCZ Z-series 650W, 80-Plus Certified Silver i believe. never yet seen a PC draw the amount of power it 'should' according to these official specifications. ;)

I have read a lot about PSU's that can't supply ATX standards yet they have been given the certificate! I suppose it all comes down to getting a quality supply that will be efficient at SLI loads and not droop or overheat or crap-out altogether!
I can always test it out (I have the basic means to test efficiency although this will require a lot of faffing about even if I limit testing to the 12V rails) and if it crashes then I can upgrade.

But on reflection, I think I'm gonna just buy a new one - if only for the fact that I want a modular one and removing this one will be a full stripdown (at least it will be a tidy and working system when I need/sell it.)

It will be fine. GTX275 SLI is in essence just a two-card version of the GTX295. A high-quality 650W PSU is more than capable of handling this, along with a decent high-end system.

That said, you will be running the PSU at a fairly high level under load, so expect the fan to spin up. I'm not sure what the Antec PSUs are like these days, but some PSUs can get noisy at high fan speeds.
