As above has anyone moved from Zen Internet to Sky Internet. If so what are there thoughts?

Thanks

Why on earth you'd want to would be one of the first that comes to my mind.

Zen are a pretty decent ISP, Sky - whilst not totally abysmal, certainly are not in the same league.

Just toying with the idea at the moment.

However, the reason for the question other then to cut down on my outgoings, Sky have just installed their own LLU in our local exchange.

Sky Internet is £12.50 PM
Zen "Active" Internet is £24.99 PM

What is the average latency on sky? As my Zen connection is around 30ms

I've had Sky for 3 years, my line syncs at 20meg, it very rarely drops and I always get full speed from it.

Bargain for £10 a month

Just make sure u can get on Sky's network, not the connect product

Thanks for the reply.

Do you play games online over this connection? If so what is the latency like?

Yes their connect service is completely rubbish. But the LLU service is totally fine.

Again I moved from Virgin Cable 10Mb to Sky LLU Unlimited 1 year ago & I haven't got one bad word to say to be honest.

Full 1.3Mb/s 24/7 (all my line handles)
1 Downtime for the space of 5minutes
No problems with pings 20 - 45ms

All for £7.50 for me cannot complain.

Ping test you asked for:

I used to play online a lot and it has always been fine

Pinging bbc.co.uk
Reply from 212.58.224.138: bytes=32 time=24ms

Thanks for the latency tests chaps, they are very helpful.

Is anyone running any Cisco equipment or a router that Sky didn't provide?

Using skys DG834GT router but with the GT Team firmware

Seem to have the slowest connection so far :( but the best ping :)

I have Sky as my VM line is currently indisposed (read, plugged into a dead Cisco) so I'm using my Sky currently I play MW2 on XBL quite a lot, no issue with pings, downloads vary though, sometimes I get 1.3-2Mb\s, sometimes 400-800Kb\s...

See if Be* have an LLU at your exchange. ;)

I did have a look at my exchange and Be* LLU isn't enabled, its only Sky & Orange that have their own LLU's installed. That's what I get for living in the middle of no where...... :p

Do Sky have a cancellation period if your not happy with the service?

EDIT:
30 day Broadband and Talk Satisfaction Guarantee: You can cancel your Sky Broadband and Talk services at any time within the first 30 days of all your services being activated.

Sky LLU is fairly decent, but getting interleaving turned off can be a bit of a chore, requires pestering support until you get through to the right person.

40Ms latency is a bit pants imo, I get 15ms to just about anywhere in the UK that has decent peering.

Worth bearing in mind that if you did leave you'll probably get charged by Zen to reconnect from an LLU provider. You also won't get any of the niceties such as a block of public IP's (let alone even a single static one) or rDNS from Sky. So worth considering if you require any of that before you make the switch.

I am not too fussed about the extras that I currently receive with Zen. Its the latency that's the major worry for me and also can I use my current Cisco router with the service.

I currently have interleaving turned off line with Zen to enable a lower latency.
