Does any one know if Intel are planning any new processors soon?

I’m thinking of upgrading from an E6700 but don’t know if I should go for the i7-930 (which has been out a while now) or wait for the next generation of Intel CPUs.

Your comment/suggestions will be appreciated.

Cheers.

This year Intel release new Sandy Bridge with 1155 and then by 2011 new LGA 2011 (Socket R) that would be replace the 1156 and 1366

for AMD it will be new Fusion core (Phenom II family) with 8 and 12 cores... that will be new Socket AM3+

Thanks guys. Thanks for the input.

I think I’ll go for the i7-930 now. My existing e6700 is showing it’s age and by next year it will be five years old.

Cheers.

sometime in first part of next year i believe. :) socket AM3+ if im remembering correctly. will bulldozer work on AM3 board, with BIOS update?

the am3 compatibility is a rumour and guess at best

if you plan on buying am3 so you can upgrade to bulldozer when it's released without buying a new mobo then you're taking a fairly big risk.

Most of the idea of it being compatible with am3 is to do with their past record, however people fail to realise that BD is a completely different architecture to K8 which means it will most likely have a new socket.

BD should still work on AM3 with such boards are the Crosshair IV etc.

AMD didnt say if it support as backward for AM3 but hope so it will support for AM3 to use new CPU... have to wait until near Xmas or begin of 2011 - I would think the latest AM3 included Crosshair IV can update BIOS to use the AM3+ CPU for BD - find out when it release, I still own Crosshair IV and hope it support for the motherboard...

what i been reading on wikipedia (i know it can be flawed at times) bulldozer sounds like a damned impressive piece of hardware, anyone notice the part about 'quad-channel DDR3' and the 32nm seems like a nice bonus for potential overclocking/power usage. was planning on changing to AM3 (Phenom II) but i might very well hold off until they get released, anyone got any idea what sort of performance increase we're expecting clock for clock over Phenom II? also has all the rumours of the modules being able to double team single threads been confirmed or is it still just speculation? :)

also AM2 and AM2+ were both compatible (usually with BIOS update) so its not unreasonable to assume that the same won't be true of AM3 and AM3+.
