Councils to charge your company (and ultimately you) to park at work

Heard this on the radio coming home. And although it has been law allowing councils to do this for a couple of years (thanks Labour), nobody had applied it until now.

Nottingham City Council applying it from 2012. Authorities including Leeds, Bristol, York, Devon, Hampshire, Bournemouth, South Somerset and Wiltshire are also considering introducing levies in an effort to raise funds and cut congestion.

Now this tit from Notts council was on the radio defending it and saying they have already deferred it because of the recession and 2012 is fair.

The charge? £250 per annum for every (I repeat, EVERY) car parking space your employer has. So £5 per week. Some councils are saying the charge will be levied directly on the employee.

He also claimed when challenged about hurting businesses that they had done studies and for 95% of companies the annual cost is less than 1% of their annual turnover. I mean, WHAT? Is he mad? £Do they not understand basic accountancy. 1% of annual turnover is actaully a percentage point of that companies profit if they don't pass the charge onto the employee eg a company making 5% net profit will only make 4% and hence this charge on their profit is really a 20% tax.

Just what this country needs to help get out of the recession. It;s not like some of us have a choice. If I tried to go via public transport, I would need to do 3 seperate bus journies totalling one and half hours for a 34 mile journey and I would be 15 minutes late for work every day. At the other end of the day I would need to leave 15 minutes early and if I missed that first bus, I would be unable to get home.

Give us a decent bloody public transport system in rural areas and i will gladly give up driving to work.

Another stupid stealth tax. I know for a fact my boss would pass the cost onto employees as he would say why should he pay £10,000 a year extra?

And this really helps Employers recruiting staff. Some places which I know with 100+ parking spaces would be paying £25,000 per annum which could have employed another member of staff.

Rant over, I;m fuming.

They have to be joking?... Surely?... A tax based upon how much land they have with lines painted on it?

Just rub out the lines and say that it isn't a car park.

I agree it is rant worthy. I no longer drive to work but I am fuming as well.

Crazy arsed idea's from people who are disconnected from reality.

No, I'll tell you how it will work. It will be assessed by Council staff driving around and counting how many cars parked on your site.

All some people will do if their employer tries to pass the cost on, is park on the street. At out place of work you could get about 10 cars legally parked free on the street (no parking fees or yellow lines), the other 30 would have to cough up or park on the street further away.

What about supermarket's car parks? Employees and customers use them so do they avoid the tax or pay more than they should?

Very silly.

I wonder if the councillors will also pay this? or will they just allow the councils to pay it which will then be passed onto the public meaning a double wamey for the tax payer, while the civil servants get away with it.

Here's another cracking quote from a council official:

A Hampshire County Council consultation document says it is considering an unspecified charge for the south of the region, including Southampton and Portsmouth, to "redress the imbalance between free commuter parking for some staff at office complexes" and "parking for other staff in public spaces where payment is required"

Taxed based on how many staff park there I assume? How they will calculate/prove it is another matter.

Do you have a link to any kind of news story?

All seems a bit fuzzy if the council is going to come in and tell business on privately owned land what they can do with parking and what is and isn't a parking space.

I'm no lawyer, but it doesn't sounds like it washes to me.

What's next? Driveway tax? Are they going to start trawling google streetview and sending people letters in the post saying that they must pay £10 a year for the privelage of having a drive in front of their house?

Just noticed it's £250 per year for the first year, rising to £350 two years later in Notts.

Not sure what the law that was passed by Labour was, but they said on the radio it was a few years ago and passed through parliament and put into law before Labour was booted out.

Con/Lib need to get this revoked ASAP.

So they want to charge to park in spaces that have been brought or leased by the business already ? that they are already paying rates for ?
