Is Stalker worth a buy?

Theres a difference between being a rookie and being a complete retard. The accuracy in this game is definatly the latter. Theres a fine line between realism and frustration and this doesn't even acknowledge its existance. Especially when enemies can hit you from 300m with grenades.

The grenade issue is legitimate in Clear Sky but was fixed AFAIK with patches and does not effect the other 2 games. I personally have no issue with the realism in connection with weapons and accuracy. Drop me into the Stalker world and I would be a complete retard when it comes to picking up a gun and trying to survive. I would in time become better with the help of better weapons I find along the way either on bodies or from people willing to sell me better weapons & upgrade & repair them and my accuracy would improve with experience. I feel this is accurately represented in the Stalker world which is not the case in the majority of FPS where you seem to start of as being ex special forces being dropped in a linear maze.

I have had Clear sky on steam for some time now. started playing it last week and complted it yesterday. Good game, but those grenades were annoying. lol.

Playing Call of Pripyat now. Really enjoying it :)

bah i will give it a 2nd go, ive got to be honest the giant walls of text put me off too especially after the loveliness of ME and ME2..

i will try my hardest :O

That doesn't change the fact you can barely hit a barn from 5 feet. Theres a point where realism goes too far (if you seriously expect me to believe a guy sent to hunt down Strelok is incapable of aiming anyway). Honestly everytime i think i'd like to pick it up again for all its flaws, i remember the frustrating aiming towards the start and don't bother.

are you just a terrible shot or something?

even at the start i could kill people easy enough, you know in stalker it takes a little time for your aim to settle

Stop>crouch>iron sights> shoot will still be wildly inaccurate, needs to be

Stop >crouch>iron sights>wait for aim to centre>shoot.

tbh the enemy does have really good accuracy,
at least at the start.

Im finding it really hard to get into but i will try again until i get the sence of the game.
also i love the gun physics.

I took forever to get into it. But once I got into the swing of things, I loved it! Still do! Excellent games. Playing through SoC again, before I continue onto CS and then CoP. I know CS isn't the best, but I just got the Complete mod for it, and I want to see how good it is. Just a shame it runs a bit badly on my PC :( Hopefully the graphics upgrade in September will help it :)

Then apparently there was something wrong with my version when i played it. Was no problem late game getting a gun with reasonable accuracy and taking care to aim, but early game you can forget it. Anything short of unloading a shotgun at close range was almost guaranteed to get you killed.

utterly overrated game series imo the first one wasn't even playable until 2 years after release was so buggy.

Strange, I managed to play Shadow of Chernobyl with no crashes or major glitches, apart from one crash which was quickly documented and fixed via a later patch.

Sure, they aren't the most polished and bug free games out there, but I rather tolerate these bugs rather than be left with something thats had it's soul ripped out by all the 'polishing'.

With the current deal on Steam it really is a bit of a no brainer as long as you are willing to download and install the 'complete' mod for SoC and you are willing to put some serious time in to getting past the first part.

SoC was great, Clear Sky was better an worse in various ways. Loved the weapon mods, didn't like the hidden anomalies so much.

Be aware that bad guys respawn so you can never really clear an area. If you don't mind that then it can be great. Working with the other stalkers can be fun and raiding the army bases can give great weapons and ammo. The monsters part is not so great for me. I like shooting the raiders more.

I loved the first two and have just bought the third. Waiting to play it tonight. Looking forward to it even more than going to sign for the new apartment we are buying also tonight :D.

I've given it a little time so far and am quite enjoying it though I am finding the firefights incredibly frustrating. It is so difficult to shoot people, I crouch, get the iron sights up, take my time and shot after shot after shot I seem to hit nothing but air.

I've lost count of how many times I've been killed, and I'm really thankful for the save anywhere system, anything else would have driven me mad by now I'm sure!!!

Glad to see it isn't just me then, I have been running into the exact same problems. Infact I have found it more accurate crouching to shoot without iron sights on and just waiting for the xhair to turn red. Then I just tap shoot until the enemy is dead :)

I've opted for the running straight at people and blasting them in the face with a sawn-off shotgun tactic which kills them quickly but leaves me very open to attacks...lol

I've been playing Stalker all day, I'm up to the X18 labs and I must say with the 2009 mod it's a top game, great atmosphere and doesn't feel dated at all.

People moaning about the weapons are just moaning, a few hours in most of the automatic weapons and rifles are more than capable of taking down foe with a few taps - particularly to the head.

Yes it's a little rough around the edges in parts but it suits the game and on the flipside there are some really nice touches that draw you in to the game, quite a few moments that made me jump (a little) and my heart race.

Glad I bought it.

i paid 3quid for it on steam played it for an hour and wish i hadnt bothered.

Really? I played it for 2 hours and hated it. After 3 hours it became the best game I ever played, right up there with HL2.

To the OP, it's worth thrice that price. Just remember to install the complete 2009 mod.

And to the people that moan about the weapons right at the start, yes, it's difficult to kill and easy to be killed. Persevere. This isn't an American made Rambo style game where you are God right from the start and kick ass. It takes a while to acquire better weapons, armour and amo, but once you got it, it becomes easier. I now routinely clear out camps with about 30 bullets whereabouts in the beginning of the game I waited for nightfall to sneak past unseen.
