Stuck as to which 24" to choose

I'm looking for a monitor, preferably 24"
The number 1 thing I'm looking for is image quality. Features aren't that important to me. Its main use will be gaming. Budget is probably £350 MAX, but I do want to get good value, however much I end up paying

Ideally, I'd like some of the following:

HDMI (supposedly a lot better than DVI?? If not, then I don't need it :) )
VESA compatibility
Fast response time
Looks good

I've been looking at the following:

HDMI and DVI are electrically compatible, meaning it's the same cable with different ends and intended for different uses.

The picture from hdmi and dvi will be the same.
You can buy small hdmi->dvi adapter dongles if the monitor doesn't have hdmi.

If you can afford the HP, it's definately worth it.
An IPS panel is far better than TN (unless you're a l337 gamer who needs 120hz).

I wouldn't worry too much about response time

if you want reassurance just look at the review on tftcentral

should be, has an about average contrast

if you're worrying about the contrast maybe you should get the NEC 23" instead, DCR is ~3300:1 which is ridiculous seeing as the next best screen is something like 1400:1

plus only things you lose are a bit of screen space and 16:10 goes down to 16:9
 
The contrast of the ZR24w is actually not that bad! The point is that the black depth is a little higher (i.e. it lets more light through on a black scene) than some other IPS panels. We are talking about a black depth of around 0.5 cd/m2 instead of just under 0.4 in some instances though; in reality this translates to pretty good contrast performance anyway.

Seriously, I feel your pain. I recently have concluded my search for a 24" monitor. Unless you have specific requirements (photo editing, wide angle viewing etc), then I don`t think that you could buy a "bad" 24" monitor (although I`ll accept if someone tells me I`m wrong).

I was seriously tempted by the iiyama e2472 LED model. Seemed to have a great spec and looks really nice (to me). One good review had me reaching for the plastic, then I found two less than encouraging write ups. Mind you, I found that with a lot of monitors that I looked at.

What made me take the plunge was going round to a friend`s house and using his 19" 16:9 gnr monitor for half an hour (reading monitor reviews !). A cheap model that still has a very acceptable picture. I thought that spending a bit more on a "quality" branded monitor should ensure good performance. I went for the Samsung P2450H, decent reviews from both "experts" and users, plus the spec seems good.

I still don`t know if the iiyama would have been a better choice, but as long as I`m happy with the Samsung, I won`t need to know.

BTW. Listening to other, better informed forum members (like PCM2) can help, but you have to make the final decision.

FWIW, I`ll try and put together some sort of review when I get my new monitor. I don`t know if that will help you to decide.

The P2450 is one of Samsung's bestsellers at the moment. The number of positive user reviews really speaks volumes. How have you found the panel overall? Sounds as if you're happy and that's what's important.

I`ve read some very positive owner`s reviews on this model. The only real negatives are complaints about the stand (common on some of the Samsung models), and the gloss bezel shows up fingerprints. I would have prefered the "safety" of a matt bezel, but I`m prepared to change my mind. My current monitor has a very dull bezel, and that suits me because I look at the screen, not the cabinet. However the P2450H is suposedly quite a looker. I`m wondering how it will look in the evening when the light behind me is lit. I suppose I`ll get used to it, but I still think that reflective bezels on TVs/Monitor is not such a good feature. We`ll see (literally !).
 
Would personally go for the HP with the IPS panel due to the better panel which gives better colours and viewing angles.

Ideal if you was to console game as well
 
Isnt the input lag on the HP panel a bit excessive for gaming compared to other alternatives? (I cant check at work)

Sorry i thought i would throw in a curve ball since its not been mentioned!
 
Due to problems, I haven't ordered yet, so I could still get another monitor. If anybody want to save the day with another suggestion, be my guest :D

I should mention, I don't actually mind dropping to a 23" screen
EDIT: If someone could save me money on something as good as the HP, but cheaper, you get a cookie

The U2311H at £270 fits your bill perfectly!
